He parked his truck in the driveway and went into the home. 45 minutes later, he discovered his truck was stolen. Two weeks of violence: Shootings, safety and what comes next for Petworth

On the afternoon of Saturday, February 1st, a car drove past the Petworth playground at 8th and Taylor Streets NW, shots rang out from the car, children and parents dove for cover under slides, and a young man was shot in the foot. He’s not talking about what happened.

In the early evening of Thursday, February 13th, MPD was involved in a shootout with a suspect in an alley off of 8th and Upshur. At least six shots rang out, residents walking home dove for cover, an officer was injured, and after a pursuit with police, a young man was gravely shot.

On Monday September 16, 2019, two incidents of gun fire impacted our community near 4th and Taylor Streets. In total, 40+ rounds of bullets were shot in the direction of a house and/or individuals in our community. Bullets hit several houses and the community is scared and angry.

This summer has seen an increase in gun violence that is understandably making residents very agitated and looking for someone to both blame and provide solutions. Neither is easy to find. 

Residents met with MPD and DC gov leadership at the Hamilton Recreation Center on Wednesday evening, August 24th to discuss the recent shooting at Hamilton Park on August 18th and talk through the issue. The takeaway is that residents are upset, and DC agencies don't have concrete strategies.

Shooting at 5th & Allison St, one injured

At an intersection known for summertime fireworks and people hanging outside late at night, a loud staccato of bullet fire confused some, scared others and injured one young woman.

The shooting on Saturday night around 10:30pm at 5th and Allison St NW was witnessed by several people and heard by neighbors for blocks around. Reports tell of anywhere from 6 to 15 shots, and from witness accounts at the scene, the shooters used both a handgun and a rifle.
