This year, Petworth has seen a dramatic increase in gun violence; the rest of the city has seen the same.

Why is that? What is the cause behind gun violence in our neighborhood? I held conversations this last month with a handful of officials and thought leaders to gain a better understanding of the issue and consider what the city is doing to address it.

Our communities are reeling from the devastating gun violence that our city is experiencing. From the shootings by Nationals Park and 14th Street to the tragic killing of 6-year-old Nyiah Courtney in Southeast DC and the public safety incidents in our own neighborhoods, it’s clear that DC and Ward 4 have not been spared from the nationwide surge of gun violence. These crimes are senseless and catastrophic.

A man showed up at his new house in 16th Street Heights on July 3rd to walk-through the home with the property manager. He parked his truck in the driveway and went into the home. 45 minutes later, he discovered his truck was stolen. Three hours after that, the truck was used in a shooting at 7th and Kennedy Streets NW.

Two weeks of violence: Shootings, safety and what comes next for Petworth

On the afternoon of Saturday, February 1st, a car drove past the Petworth playground at 8th and Taylor Streets NW, shots rang out from the car, children and parents dove for cover under slides, and a young man was shot in the foot. He’s not talking about what happened.

In the early evening of Thursday, February 13th, MPD was involved in a shootout with a suspect in an alley off of 8th and Upshur. At least six shots rang out, residents walking home dove for cover, an officer was injured, and after a pursuit with police, a young man was gravely shot.

Multiple gunshots were fired in the early afternoon of Saturday, February 1st in front of the Petworth Playground at the Petworth Recreation Center. The gunfire left one man in the hospital, and multiple parents and children hiding under the playground equipment.
