You and all of our neighbors are invited to join President Lincoln’s Cottage on September 19, from 10am to 2pm, for our free annual Homecoming celebration inspired by the Lincoln family’s time living on the grounds of the Soldiers’ Home, here in the Petworth neighborhood.

While Abraham Lincoln came to the Cottage to escape the pressures of wartime-Washington, his son Tad Lincoln experienced it as a delightful place of adventure and play. During the three summers his family was in residence, he explored the grounds with neighboring kids, chatted with Bucktail soldiers who affectionately bestowed upon him the military rank of “Third Lieutenant,” romped the lawn with his menagerie of pets (including peacocks and goats) given to him by an adoring public, and he played checkers on the veranda with his famous father.

The offerings at Homecoming are inspired by Tad’s favorite Cottage activities: pony rides, a petting zoo, lawn games, stories, crafts and live music.

“Homecoming is a celebration of the Cottage as a family home,” explained CEO & Executive Director Callie Hawkins. “We love seeing our friends and neighbors enjoying this place as the Lincolns did. We want everyone to feel at home here.”

We welcome you to enjoy our Homecoming activities free of charge.  Food and Cottage tours will be available for purchase.  ours take place on the hour, and often sell out, so advanced purchase is strongly recommended.

Get more information and RSVP to attend on the Lincoln’s Cottage website.

We’d love to see you all there!
