President Lincoln’s Cottage is buzzing with activity as we rapidly approach our country’s 250th birthday. As busy as we are, this milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on what it means to be American and connect with one another. With that in mind, we have several free community events to share with the Petworth community.

🍕⛓️‍💥 On Thursday, June 25th we commemorate Civic Season with a Slice of History Pizza Party with our 2026 Students Opposing Slavery cohort. Students Opposing Slavery is a presidential-award-winning program where young people from far and near gather at the Cottage to learn how to combat human trafficking. Each student creates an action plan to bring the effort to their own communities. The Slice of History Pizza Party gives the public a chance to be involved in the program by offering feedback on the action plans over a delicious slice of pie.

🇺🇸 🎩 You’re invited to a special Independence Day celebration on the evening of Thursday, July 2nd. On July 4, 1864, on the very day President Abraham Lincoln moved to the Cottage for the last time, he signed An Act To Encourage Immigration. Lincoln saw immigrants as crucial ingredients to the nation’s future success. To commemorate the Act, we will be hosting a storytelling event focusing on the immigrant experience. Food will be served from immigrant-owned food trucks. Register for the Independence Day fun ▸

📣 On Tuesday, July 7th, we are hosting a Braver Angels Debate, a structured conversation that promotes listening, respectful dissent, and productive dialogue. The topic of the debate is timely: Resolved: America Needs a Third Founding. If you are in the mood for the kind of spirited deliberation that Lincoln enjoyed, this event is for you. Register to attend the Debate ▸

📚 🎯 And finally, if you’ve been dejected over the temporary closing of the Petworth Library, please bring your families to Lincoln’s lawn on Saturday, July 11th for Library Day. We will be hosting a full afternoon of crafts, games, reading on Lincoln’s lawn. There are two sessions offered for neighbors to join this celebration of literacy and community. RSVP for Library Day ▸

We are grateful to be surrounded by such wonderful neighbors as we reflect on our history and begin to envision a new path forward.

We look forward to seeing you soon at the Cottage!
