Watch a wonderful piece of Petworth-area family history on PBS with Linda & Eric White

Watch a wonderful piece of Petworth-area family history on PBS with Linda & Eric White

Petworth native, Linda Crichlow White and her husband Eric White, were featured on PBS’s Legacy List on January 11th. Linda and Eric had lived in their six-bedroom house in 16th Street Heights on the 1600 block of Nicholson Street NW for 28 years and were getting ready to downsize. Through mutual friends and acquaintances, she connected with the PBS show Legacy List, a show about the hidden treasures and heirlooms found while families downsize across America, and they were seeking to feature more black families on the show. Petworth and Kennedy St Markets are open on a rainy day

Petworth and Kennedy St Markets are open on a rainy day

Don't let the rain earlier get you down. The Petworth Community Market and the 14th and Kennedy St Community Market are both open and hopping with vendors and residents.

Stop by the Petworth Market and visit Meat Crafters for a fresh sausage or get some fresh (and washed by the rain) produce and a cup of coffee. (I even got to meet Princess Leia... the dog.)

See two galleries and read more after the break:

Crandall on Nat Geo: pics of the "real DC"

Local photographer Bill Crandall has a well-deserved reputation as a talented and prominent DC photographer. He was published today on the National Geographic PROOF website, in an article and picture story called "Forget Capitol Hill, These Images Show the Real D.C." by NatGeo Assistant Photo Editor Becky Harlan.

Featuring Crandall's photography from around our local area (Shaw, Bloomingdale, Petworth), the pictures offer a snapshot of DC life away from the big dome downtown.

More often than not, Washington, D.C., is associated with power and politics, with a dash of fireworks and monuments thrown in for good measure. That stereotype of the capital is exactly what photographer Bill Crandall avoids in his mysterious compositions of the District’s neighborhoods. His camera isn’t in the press pool but is turned on the “real city where people live.”

Check out the full article and gallery on the National Geographic PROOF website.

And congrats to Bill Crandall for being published on National Geographic!

Local residents talk about why they chose Petworth

Belinda Garza, Matt Hartwig and cutie Graciela

Belinda Garza, Matt Hartwig and cutie Graciela

There's a nice article on UrbanFamily.com about local residents Matt Hartwig and Belinda Garza and their reasons for moving to Petworth to put down roots. For them, it was about the community.

I've met both Matt and Belinda at local social and community events, and they are very engaged in the neighborhood.

From the article:

"Petworth is one of several neighborhoods in D.C. that’s seen a transformation as a result of the city’s landmark growth in recent years. New restaurants and businesses (including “an actual bookstore that sells books,” Hartwig wrily notes) have popped up within walking distance—and for the couple, so has a community."

Belinda is quoted saying about Petworth: “The neighborhood is changing so much, and so quickly, that all the residents are really active in what’s going on,” Garza says. D.C.’s growth has led to the development of New York-style enclaves with their own identities. Says Hartwig, “Each neighborhood is developing its own vibe. This one feels very family-oriented. You still have a nice mix of new people with longtime residents, who have seen the neighborhood go through all kinds of transitions.”
