MPD officers from Petworth police service areas 404 and 407 participated in the protection and crowd control efforts at the protests during Friday's inauguration. In my opinion, MPD did an outstanding job protecting residents and visitors, using restraint to ensure those acting lawfully were able to exercise their Constitutional rights... and those who were causing damage were dealt with appropriately.

The Metropolitan Police Department is organized into seven Districts that divide DC in different sections, each led by a Commander. Each District is subdivided into Police Service Areas (PSA), lead by a Captain and Lieutenants. As of January 3rd, MPD announced that they have created a new patrol structure to go along with the existing Districts and PSAs, called "Sectors."

The PSA 407 meeting scheduled for Thursday, December 15th has been canceled. 

Our next meeting will be in February after the holidays and Inauguration.

I have spoken to most of the usual attendees throughout the month and we have made great progress towards the quality of living in our PSA.  PSA 407 is enjoying a double digit crime reduction thanks to the partnerships that we have established with you, the community.

MPD urges people to use "Exchange Zones" for online buying/selling

MPD sent out a warning to residents this week, reminding people that there have been a series of robberies from people supposedly buying / selling things from online sites like Craigslist. Basically, you find a great deal, agree to meet up some place and you end up getting robbed instead of selling your old iPhone. 

MPD wants you to be safe, and consider using one of their "Exchange Zones."

Judge grants eviction for troubled 805 Rock Creek Church Road

For a long time now, the people living at 805 Rock Creek Church Road have been the focus of neighbor frustration and fears, as well as the attention of various law enforcement agencies. Between witnessing late night (and daylight) drug deals and a constant stream of people coming and going at the house that sits next to a popular daycare, frustrated residents began emailing MPD and city officials to do something about the property.

Residents wanted an end to the drugs, parents wanted safety for their children at Ideal Child Development Center next door, and MPD wanted to remove ongoing illegal activity.

Resident angst about gun violence and parks once thought safe

This summer has seen an increase in gun violence that is understandably making residents very agitated and looking for someone to both blame and provide solutions. Neither is easy to find. 

Residents met with MPD and DC gov leadership at the Hamilton Recreation Center on Wednesday evening, August 24th to discuss the recent shooting at Hamilton Park on August 18th and talk through the issue. The takeaway is that residents are upset, and DC agencies don't have concrete strategies.
