Draft agenda for ANC 4C June meeting

Draft agenda for ANC 4C June meeting

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4C meets on Wednesday, June 8th at 6:30pm the Petworth Library. Inside is the draft agenda for the meeting, subject to change (for example, there's been an incredibly painful back and forth over including the Code of Conduct proposed by Commissioner Jonah Goodman, so hopefully that one stays in the agenda).

Celebrating Petworth: a photo gallery of the 2016 Festival

Celebrating Petworth: a photo gallery of the 2016 Festival

The third annual Celebrate Petworth Festival was a great time! The musicians were amazing, the vendors were great (the Petworth History tent was packed!), the cutest dog show was, well, cute, and the 3-on-3 basketball game was great to watch. A lot of talented kids (and some not-too-shabby adults, either).

A year of weekly Petworth newsletters

A year of weekly Petworth newsletters

Tonight's Weekly Update marks the 52nd issue — one year — of email newsletters. I started the once-a-week newsletter on May 29, 2015, and only missed one week (I think I had the flu that week). Everything you read on Petworth News is about or impacts our neighborhood, whether you live in Petworth or Southwest Petworth, Brightwood Park, 16th Street Heights, etc. It's about what happens here.

A conversation with Calvin Gurley, candidate for Ward 4 council

A conversation with Calvin Gurley, candidate for Ward 4 council

If you live in Ward 4 or just drive around the area, then you've probably heard of Calvin Gurley or at least seen his campaign signs. Never described as shy of sharing his opinions, Calvin's emails on the various area listservs have garnered him some fans and some detractors. While you might not agree with all of his positions, it's hard to disagree with everything Calvin Gurley discusses, as he talks about important issues from the point of view of wanting what is best for DC residents.  Read the interview...

A look at Calvin Gurley's campaign positions

A look at Calvin Gurley's campaign positions

Calvin Gurley is running for the Ward 4 Council seat in the District of Columbia. A resident of Takoma, Calvin feels very vested in the health and well-being of DC residents and is running for DC Council for the third time. He thinks his passion, drive to help residents and his legislative ideas make him the best candidate for Ward 4 Council. Here are some of his campaign positions...

Community meeting on working with young adults & returning citizens

Commissioner David Sheon sent out an email that I meant to share. He's scheduled a second meeting at the Brightwood United Methodist Church (8th & Jefferson St NW) at 6:30 tonight (May 31st) to talk more about non-judicial ways to help at-risk youth and returning citizens. If you live in the area or are concerned about the ways to help reduce crime while helping those most in need of support, you should consider attending. Read Commissioner Sheon's email...

MPD no longer tweeting breaking crime, using AlertDC system instead (updated 5/31)

According to a Washington Post article, MPD is no longer using their Twitter feed to share breaking news on crime occurring in the District. Can't say I'm a fan of any police department finding ways to communicate less with residents who want to be informed and engaged. Read more for details...

Photos from the Petworth Jazz & Dance Project

Photos from the Petworth Jazz & Dance Project

I think the combination of the Petworth Jazz Project with the Petworth Dance Project makes for an incredible evening at Petworth Park.  With dancers from Kalanidhi Dance, Nancy Havlik Dance Performance Group, Countess Winfrey and Company Danzante (who danced while the jazz band Véronneau played), there was an over-abundance to listen to and watch.

Petworth Jazz Project starts 6th season tonight at 8th & Taylor

One of my favorite Petworth events kicks off its sixth season at the Petworth Rec Center this evening. The Petworth Jazz Project offers music for kids and adults, yoga, professional dance and food, and one of the best opportunities to hang out with your neighbors. Of course I'll be there with my camera, like some neighborhood wedding photographer prowling the crowd.
