Petworth resident teaches non-violent approaches to neighborhood teens through the Civil Rights Cafe

For more than a decade, Petworth resident Louis Henderson has helped DC youth learn about the civil rights movement, non-violent resistance, and self-expression through a program called Civil Rights Cafe. Now, Henderson has decided to expand the program to his home neighborhood in hopes of inspiring more teens to apply the non-violent teachings of the Civil Rights movement to their everyday lives.

The Petworth Library is marking Martin Luther King, Jr Day with an event on Saturday, January 14th at 1:30pm with an afternoon of Civil Rights speeches. Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd will share his personal perspective on civil rights and MikeIann Scerbo will give an educational speech about the Civil Rights Movement.

Community meeting on working with young adults & returning citizens

Commissioner David Sheon sent out an email that I meant to share. He's scheduled a second meeting at the Brightwood United Methodist Church (8th & Jefferson St NW) at 6:30 tonight (May 31st) to talk more about non-judicial ways to help at-risk youth and returning citizens.
