A bloody February: Repeated gun violence leaves Petworth shaken and frustrated

Petworth has been rocked by nine shootings over the last month, most of them in broad daylight. Residents are upset, wanting to know why these acts of violence keep happening. Are they gang related? Targeted violence and “street beefs”? What’s going on, and what can they do?

On the afternoon of Saturday, February 1st, a car drove past the Petworth playground at 8th and Taylor Streets NW, shots rang out from the car, children and parents dove for cover under slides, and a young man was shot in the foot. He’s not talking about what happened.
In the early evening of Thursday, February 13th, MPD was involved in a shootout with a suspect in an alley off of 8th and Upshur. At least six shots rang out, residents walking home dove for cover, an officer was injured, and after a pursuit with police, a young man was gravely shot.

ANC 4C Commissioner Kim Varzi sent an email about an upcoming meeting to discuss safety concerns at the Petworth Playground. The meeting is on Tuesday, February 6th at the Petworth Recreation Center (801 Taylor Street NW). This is precipitated by the recent shooting on Monday, February 3rd at the park.

According to co-owner Holley Simmons, they will continue to give classes and training sessions, but now only at client locations.

Buna Coffeehouse, located at 4400 Georgia Avenue, was broken into overnight on January 2nd. The thieves broke a window on the side of the coffee shop and stole money from the register. Fortunately, Buna has a lot of security cameras, so MPD was able to get images of the people responsible for the burglary.
