Draft agenda for ANC 4D July meeting (seeking someone to take notes)

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4D meets on July 19th at 7pm at Truesdell Education Campus, 800 Ingraham St NW. Come hear Pepco try to justify the new rate increase now that they're owned by Exelon.

Want to write the notes for ANC 4D?
Due to other obligations, I can no longer cover the 4D meetings in person. If there is someone who attends the 4D meetings who would like to write the notes, I'll publish you! If not, Petworth News won't have coverage of 4D meetings (I have offered to publish their official minutes). Contact me if interested.

Meet Jonah Goodman, ANC 4C commissioner

Meet Jonah Goodman, ANC 4C commissioner

Since Petworth News started last year, I’ve invited all sitting ANC 4C and 4D commissioners to participate in interviews in a series called “Better Know a Commissioner!” The goal is to help residents to get to know the people who volunteer their time to represent constituents needs on the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions.

Today I’m happy to introduce Jonah Goodman, who is the ANC Commissioner for ANC 4C in Single Member District 4C10. Jonah took the place of Kathleen Crowley, who resigned in early Spring of this year.

Is there a conflict of interest for Petworth News & sponsors? (spoiler: no)

Is there a conflict of interest for Petworth News & sponsors? (spoiler: no)

A neighbor on the 16th Street Heights listserv sent me an email about my article looking for sponsors with a question about my conflict of interest policy. It's a good question she asked, so I replied to her email.

I thought I'd re-publish the exchange here in case others have the same question (I've redacted her name for privacy reasons).

It's a Petworth News "Call for Sponsors!"

It's a Petworth News "Call for Sponsors!"

PetworthNews.org is just over a year old, and it's time to look for sponsors for the website.

Looking for sponsors is my least favorite activity; I'd rather write articles than chase advertising. But since I spend 30+ hours a week doing this "hobby," the extra small income helps pay for web hosting, equipment, software and other web services. And frankly, helping to support local businesses and organizations is one of my favorite things to do.

If you want to reach a large, local audience... read on!

Op-Ed: If a tree falls in Petworth and nobody hears it

Op-Ed: If a tree falls in Petworth and nobody hears it

(Ed note: Local resident Tom Burnett writes the following op-ed, with the hope to share thoughts about an old tree that he loved  and what it means to be a good neighbor.

Every day on my way to work I pass a beautiful, enormous black walnut tree in a back alley of Petworth. It stands watch over our rowhouses like a gentle giant, residing here since before our neighborhood was built over a century ago. Its trunk is so stout that it would take two people to wrap their arms around it.

To my horror, on my way home this week, I observed a work crew hauling away its decapitated branches, leaving nothing but a twelve foot tall stump in the ground.

Fireworks survey results show a need for more discussion

Fireworks survey results show a need for more discussion

The local listservs sure have been chatty about the July 4th fireworks in the neighborhood. Granted, doing this survey might keep things heated, but I thought it would be interesting to see how people would vote. (As always, caveat that this isn't a scientific poll.) Basically, more discussion needs to be had and a good solution found that meets all desires. See the results of the survey...
