Here’s to Roosevelt High: an alum looks at the school’s opening

On Friday, August 19th, I drove north on 13th Street towards Roosevelt Senior High School for the official ribbon-cutting. There ceremony was set up to unveil, as Councilmember Brandon Todd described the newly renovated school, the city’s “$140 million investment.” As I got closer to my destination, the steeple of the school came into view; I was filled with mixed feelings. I knew it would be the beginning of a new era for my alma mater.

Technology has become a staple in our lives and homes, with computers, mobile phones, smart watches, wifi and internet access the new norm. Yet there are homes in Petworth with no computers or Internet access. Getting online isn't a convenience, it's a difficulty.

One local resource to help close some of that digital divide is our Petworth Library and its publicly accessible offering computer labs.

Resident angst about gun violence and parks once thought safe

This summer has seen an increase in gun violence that is understandably making residents very agitated and looking for someone to both blame and provide solutions. Neither is easy to find. 

Residents met with MPD and DC gov leadership at the Hamilton Recreation Center on Wednesday evening, August 24th to discuss the recent shooting at Hamilton Park on August 18th and talk through the issue. The takeaway is that residents are upset, and DC agencies don't have concrete strategies.

Last week more than a dozen Petworth residents convened at the Library to discuss how our community could successfully host one of DC’s first open streets initiatives next spring. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) and the DC Office of Planning secured a grant for a creative placemaking project and are planning an open streets event in Petworth in Spring 2017.

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4C met on August 10th and had what amounted to be a typically wonky meeting. MPD talked about 14th Street, DDOT presented and answers questions from the ANC (sans Director Dormsjo), and the topic of bike lanes and safety along New Hampshire Avenue got both the commissioners and the community in a tizzy.

I moved to Petworth in 2007, long before there was a Yes! Organic Market in the neighborhood and all the restaurants and stores along Upshur Street. It has been great to see the neighborhood evolve over time and connect with neighbors who are working on inspiring initiatives locally and globally.
