Taqueria Del Barrio looks to bring a taste of Mexico to Upshur Street

The new restaurant on Upshur wants to excite your taste buds with original and traditional Mexican dishes, with a focus on great flavor.

For dining options, Upshur Street has a diner, a Japanese-inspired restaurant, a Latin wine bar, a cocktail bar, a saloon, a wood-fired oven pizza place and heck, even a fast-food Chinese restaurant. And opening Thursday, March 30th, it also has a Mexican restaurant, Taqueria Del Barrio.

Help paint some benches at Grant Circle

Join Friends of Grant Circle this Sunday, April 2nd at 10 am to help keep Grant Circle looking great! Last year, we painted all the benches inside the Circle. This week we'll tackle the benches around the playground on the north side (5th and Webster). We'll deadhead the daffodils that have finished blooming and pickup trash as well.

Petworth resident Caroline Cragin has started Community Mediation DC, a neighborhood mediation program modeled after successful mediation centers in Maryland. The program is still in its infancy, but already has a website and a core team of volunteer staff who are ready to take cases.

Mediation comes to DC with a kickoff meeting on April 5th at Petworth Library...

"District Soup," community projects, music and a winning idea for Kennedy Street

Watch presentations, eat soup, listen to music, VOTE and help improve the 14th & Kennedy Street area!

Join the Kennedy Street Development Corporation (KSDC) and the Community Alliance for Upper Fourteenth Street (CAUFS) at their next "District SOUP" event at the Back Alley Theater. Four neighbors will present community projects to help support the neighborhood, while all money generated will go to help one of those projects become a reality. And you get a vote.

There will be food, drink and music, courtesy of Petworth-area musician David Curtin on his guitar...

Community Carrot, the new non-profit from David Sheon is having a ribbon cutting ceremony and will open its doors at 508 Kennedy St NW for their first class of "entrepreneurs in training" on Saturday, March 25th at 2pm. They'd love to have the community come out to support them.

Petworth Citizen is hosting a fundraiser for the really worthy kids' non-profit on Tuesday, March 28, between 5-7pm for a happy hour benefiting DC SCORES. 10% of alcohol sales during the two hours will directly benefit their poet-athletes.

Could broken rail clips on Metro line be the cause of shaking houses in Petworth?

WTOP published a really interesting overview of the recent Federal Transportation Agency report on the status of the ongoing Metro repairs. FTA investigators have been closely monitoring WMATA and its employees as the SafeTrack process continues to work on existing defects in the metro system. One of the conclusions from the recent FTA report concerns the issue, first reported by Petworth News on December 13th, about the shaking and noise Petworth residents are experiencing since this summer.

Come to a literary happy hour, raffle & fundraiser for the Petworth Library — with me reading Updike!

The Friends of Petworth Library is joining up with Petworth Citizen for a special happy hour to raise funds for the Library on Tuesday, March 21st from 5-7pm. There will be a raffle for some excellent books, and five locals will be reading their choice selections from authors who have March birthdays. Petworth Citizen will donate 10% of the alcohol sales during Happy Hour (5 -7pm) to the Friends group.

So come out and drink and listen to excerpts of the celebrated authors as read by local peeps -- including me reading from Rabbit, Run by John Updike.

His latest endeavor is a non-profit to work with DC youth who want to do something with their lives that's under their control. The recent legislation passed by the DC Council to strengthen the animal cruelty laws in DC is only good for 90 days. It's up to the Council to make it permanent, and it's up to you to help make it happen.

Send a Councilmember an email, testify in front of the Council and keep pushing DC government.
