From Petworth to Malawi, using technology to deliver high-quality healthcare

I moved to Petworth in 2007, long before there was a Yes! Organic Market in the neighborhood and all the restaurants and stores along Upshur Street. It has been great to see the neighborhood evolve over time and connect with neighbors who are working on inspiring initiatives locally and globally.

I would like to share with you one of the initiatives I am working on.

DC has a problem with lead pipes. That means YOU may have a problem with lead in the water because of that. You can test your water to see if it contains high levels of lead... but the test may be misleading because of many issues (still worth a test, though). Here's what you should do.

Found this weird book... (take a survey!)

Somebody dropped this really weird book on my porch today. Apparently it's full of phone numbers! Who knew?! I think I found your number in it, too.

Did you know that phone books waste a ton of resources? According to Vox Media: "All that wasteful printing produces roughly 3.57 million tons of greenhouse gases and consumes billions of gallons of water, despite the fact that recycled paper is generally used. Furthermore, municipalities pay millions of dollars to trash or recycle stacks of books that haven't even been removed from their shrink-wrapping. There must be a better way."

ANC 4C prematurely votes against the DDOT Livability Study

In typical dysfunctional form, the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4C voted at their meeting on Wednesday, August 10th to oppose DDOT's Livability Study recommendations (as yet unpublished at that time) about a suggested bike lane along New Hampshire Avenue between Grant Circle and Georgia Avenue.

DDOT releases draft Livability Study recommendations

The DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) released draft recommendations for the Rock Creek East II Livability study, their proposal for traffic changes to the Petworth area and Ward 4. The goal of the study is to identify ways for residents and visitors in the Petworth area to commute safely, whether by car, bike or on foot. The guidelines include recommendations for road improvements, bike lanes, crosswalks and more.

Special "Photos of Petworth" exhibition at the Petworth Library

The Petworth Library has been collecting photographs of the Petworth area for the past two months for a special “Photos of Petworth” program to create a visual time capsule of the Petworth neighborhood in the summer of 2016. The Library will be hosting a special exhibit this Wednesday, August 11th at 7pm.

Update on Chez Billy Closing: A refresh

I received word that Chez Billy was closing its doors on Sunday night without notice. I reached out to the restaurant, and spoke to an employee who confirmed the story. The employee said they weren't told any details of the closure beyond it was "closed for good." Today we're getting a tad more info.
