The best recurring outdoor jazz series in DC is on again this Saturday, September 24th at Petworth Park (8th & Taylor Streets NW). This Petworth Jazz Project once again features the amazing music of Mark Meadows, the dance of Petworth Dance Project, kids' music by Baba Ras D, food by Chik's Chik'n Food Truck and pre-show, in-between and post-show music by DJ Unknown (Richard Patterson).

This Saturday, the inaugural Petworth Fashion Fest will transform the 800 block of Upshur Street into the fashion center of the nation’s capital for an afternoon. Organized by the owners of Willow Fashion and Fia’s Fabulous Finds, the Petworth Fashion Fest will feature nearly three dozen clothing and accessory vendors, along with live performances from local DJs.

On Friday, August 19th, I drove north on 13th Street towards Roosevelt Senior High School for the official ribbon-cutting. There ceremony was set up to unveil, as Councilmember Brandon Todd described the newly renovated school, the city’s “$140 million investment.” As I got closer to my destination, the steeple of the school came into view; I was filled with mixed feelings. I knew it would be the beginning of a new era for my alma mater.

Another great evening courtesy of the Petworth Jazz Project. This show featured local theater Teatro de la Luna performing for kids, music by Richard Patterson (DJ Unknown) and a wonderful performance by Cecily Alexa Bumbray food by Crepe Amour and was sponsored by Slash Run (who also hosted an after party later that evening).

Another summer month in Petworth comes to the last Saturday, and another Petworth Jazz Project is ready to go. Saturday, August 27th finds the Project starting at 5:30pm with kids music, with jazz kicking off at 6:30pm. The evening is sponsored by Slash Run.

After many years and a $140 million renovation budget, Roosevelt High School, home of the Rough Riders, opened for students on Monday, August 22nd. The new class will graduate in 2021. Read some of the statements made at the ribbon cutting and see some pictures.

Last week more than a dozen Petworth residents convened at the Library to discuss how our community could successfully host one of DC’s first open streets initiatives next spring. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) and the DC Office of Planning secured a grant for a creative placemaking project and are planning an open streets event in Petworth in Spring 2017.

The Petworth Library has been collecting photographs of the Petworth area for the past two months for a special “Photos of Petworth” program to create a visual time capsule of the Petworth neighborhood in the summer of 2016. The Library will be hosting a special exhibit this Wednesday, August 11th at 7pm.
