August Petworth Jazz Project (huge photo gallery)

August Petworth Jazz Project (huge photo gallery)

It was a very crowded Petworth Park for the August Petworth Jazz Project.

Starting with Baba Ras D at 5:30, the field was packed with families to listen to the toddler/younger oriented music. (I often describe Baba as the Bruce Springsteen for kids -- they adore him.)

Butcher Brown came on around 7 and they were wonderful -- an insanely talented jazz band. And from their expressions while playing, they were digging it too. "Hello kids! We're not use to playing for kids, this is great!"

Volunteer some time and grab a drink with a veteran

The Friends of the Soldier's Home has one of its regular "Saloon Nights" coming up next week, and they're looking for volunteers to join the awesome veterans at the Armed Forced Retirement Home for some drinks, some songs and always a fun time.

I volunteer with the Friends and have attended a Saloon night, and it's a great time drinking, eating, singing and talking with the men and women who live at the AFRH. They're all really interesting to chat with, and it's a guaranteed good time. Plus it's nice to hang out with neighbors. (And hey, if you're a parent of a Creative Minds Charter School child, consider giving back to the AFRH by volunteering with the Friends of the Soldier's Home.)

If you're interested in spending a couple of hours shooting the breeze with retired veterans, considering volunteering with the Friends on September 1st from 6-8pm. Note that you need to be 21 and over to volunteer for this particular event (it is "saloon night" after all...).

To volunteer, send an email to the volunteer coordinator, Lori Lincoln (but only if you're sure you're going to attend). She'll get back to you with details of where to go, etc.

Mark your calendars for upcoming FOSH events!
 - AFRH Resident/Staff Baseball Game on Wednesday, September 9th
 - JINGO for all ages on Thursday, September 17th
 - Happy Hour on Tuesday, September 29th
 - Fall Family Festival on Sunday, October 4th

Southwest Petworth Lemonade Social this Wednesday

The next Southwest Petworth Lemonade Social is this Wednesday, August 26th from 6:30pm to dark at the grassy triangle at Kansas Ave and Quincy Street. There's always some tasty lemonade and people have been bringing cookies, veggies and other treats -- feel free to bring something for neighbors (or local bloggers) to enjoy!

And make sure you tell your neighbors who may not be online -- getting out to meet people and kids in a causal setting makes for a great community event.

The SWP Lemonade Social is the fourth Wednesday of every month.

Take part in the AJ Cooper Day of Service

Take part in the AJ Cooper Day of Service

I met AJ Cooper last summer at an ANC 4C meeting, when Joe Martin pointed him out to me across the room. "See him? That's AJ Cooper. He's going to run for council," Joe said. "Watch, he'll probably win." I looked over at Cooper and wondered who he was.

Monday is the AJ Cooper Day of Service in remembrance of a powerful DC activist. Read more after the break:

Come hear seven stories of DC with Nicholson

Come hear seven stories of DC with Nicholson

It’s great when a DC writer celebrates the culture and life of the city through fiction. Local DC author and former editor and book reviewer for The Washington Post Book World, David Nicholson does that with his latest book, “Flying Home, Seven Stories of the Secret City.”

His latest book takes a deeper look at DC, told through seven stories. “All too often, writing about black Washington focuses on pathology like drug use and crime,” David told me. “I didn't want to add to that body of work. Instead, I wanted to celebrate the extraordinary in the ordinary, to give glimpses into the heroic lives of ordinary men and women dealing with issues that are universal."

Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd held a meeting at the Fourth District Headquarters last Thursday night, July 23rd. The meeting was an opportunity for residents to get a quick update on crime in the Fourth District and asks questions of Chief Lanier and 4D Commander Manlapaz.

Brandon opened the meeting by thanking everyone and mentioned that he was now 60 days into his term as councilmember. He called the Public Safety Meeting to make sure residents were able to share their concerns and to discuss the recent uptick in break-ins and robberies in the area.
