DPR makes changes to splash parks and kids' pool due to activism from Petworth community

A couple of weeks ago I received a tweet that the kids' pool at the Upshur Pool was closed, much to the consternation of parents. Then again, this weekend, the kids' pool was still closed due to a lack of lifeguards. Then on Saturday, at 7pm during the Petworth Jazz Project, the spray park at Petworth Recreation Center suddenly turned off. It's hot, and kids want a way to keep cool, and parents want a way to occupy their children during the heat of the day.

Is it appropriate to continually post to the community listservs?

Is it appropriate to continually post to the community listservs?

Over the past several weeks, a local private school has begun heavily posting their marketing messages on the area’s community listservs. The Kingsbury Center, (5000 14th St NW), has sent multiple posts to the Brightwood, Greater Grant Circle, Petworth, Crestwood and many other listservs promoting the school, its website and encouraging residents to learn more and enroll at the private school. The emails started on or about May 8th, and have been posted every day since then by their marketing coordinator, Jennifer Henderson.

An unscientific survey about the Grant Circle one-lane test

An unscientific survey about the Grant Circle one-lane test

You probably noticed the traffic barrels around Grant Circle this week and the new traffic pattern. The bright orange barrels aren't a new landscaping trend, rather part of a test being run by DDOT to see how cutting the circle down to one lane affects surrounding traffic, and whether that change enhances pedestrian safety.

Petworth News is conducting an unscientific survey about the experiment through Monday, May 29th. We'll share the results here later next week and will make sure that DDOT sees your comments.

Could West Elementary get renovated sooner?

Could West Elementary get renovated sooner?

Area residents have been pushing DC Councilmembers for action on renovating West Elementary Campus. The long-delayed renovation of West, a small DCPS school in 16th Street Heights, has a chance to start much sooner than Mayor Bowser proposed in her 2018 budget. If so, it may be thanks to a torrid of emails and meetings from residents.

Thanks to a great company called Lorem, there's new features on Petworth News

I build websites for a living so I’m pretty good with getting things on my blog set up the way I want them. Thing is, between work, family and the blog, I’m short on time, so I end up not doing some things that I wish I could. But... If you've been reading Petworth News for a while, you have seen some changes on the site lately. Well, I didn't get more free time, instead, I started working with a small start-up company called Lorem, who has a Petworth connection. And they're great.

Here's some of the changes...
