The Humane Rescue Alliance has launched a creative initiative to help combat the city’s growing rat problem while providing a second (or maybe third) life for cats in their shelter who might not otherwise be adoptable.

The Blue Collar Cats program places healthy cats with businesses and homeowners in alleys and alcoves around the city. The cats’ only job: patrol their domain for rodents. The program is similar to a barn cat program that might be found in rural areas. And they're looking for businesses or homeowners who want to support one of the Blue Collar Cats...

For more than a decade, Petworth resident Louis Henderson has helped DC youth learn about the civil rights movement, non-violent resistance, and self-expression through a program called Civil Rights Cafe. Now, Henderson has decided to expand the program to his home neighborhood in hopes of inspiring more teens to apply the non-violent teachings of the Civil Rights movement to their everyday lives.

"My School DC" wants to help parents as school lottery deadline looms

Figuring out the DC school lottery isn't easy, and the deadline to apply is fast approaching. Parents and guardians have under two weeks to submit their lottery applications to My School DC for public school grades Pre-K 3 through 8th grade. The lottery application deadline is March 1st.

The deadline for high school grades 9 through 12 was February 1st and has now passed. (Though, according to Emerald Becker, Director of Enrollment at DCPS who spoke at the February 8th ANC 4C meeting, you can still apply; you should check with My School DC for the details.)

David, an ANC 4D commissioner, helped to organize a community meeting at the Brightwood United Methodist Church, and it was there that he began to see the crime problem in a whole new way.

“It was like a shot through me,” David said, describing the impact of Lockhart’s words to him.

Cheers & kudos to Petworth-area MPD officers serving at the inauguration protests

MPD officers from Petworth police service areas 404 and 407 participated in the protection and crowd control efforts at the protests during Friday's inauguration. In my opinion, MPD did an outstanding job protecting residents and visitors, using restraint to ensure those acting lawfully were able to exercise their Constitutional rights... and those who were causing damage were dealt with appropriately.
