Update on changes coming to 13th & Quincy

Last week we wrote about the meditation park planned for a triangular lot bordered by 13th Street NW, Kansas Street NW and Quincy Street NW. Since that time, a few new developments have materialized. Thanks to Commissioner Bennett Hilley for these useful updates:

A meditation park is coming to Quincy and 13th, but not all neighbors feel tranquil about it

DPR is proceeding with plans to turn the triangular patch of grass bordered by 13th Street NW, Kansas Street NW, and Quincy Street NW into a “meditation garden-style” park. But not everyone is happy about the changes. Some neighborhood residents say that while they are in favor of upgrading, they were not properly consulted about the form and function that the upgrades should take.

Hateful flyers appear in Brightwood and north; donate a dollar for every flyer?

I debated publicizing this when I first heard about it a few days ago, as I don’t want to give the lowlife who’s posting the hateful flyers attention, because that’s what this idiot wants (that, and to scare people). But people need to know how to respond and trash this crap.

Made of gold? Roofless house listed at $499,999 in Brightwood

File this in the you-ain't-seen-it-all file, or the greed-ahead-of-common-sense folder, but a house is listed for sale in Brightwood that has no roof. It's a shell of a house that DCRA put a stop work order on last year for "illegal construction / working without a permit," according to an article Washingtonian.

A great opportunity: Apply to attend the US Park Police Citizens' Academy

The United States Park Police is holding it's next Citizens' Academy next month, and they're looking for people to apply to participate. I highly recommend participating in the Academy.

But the rest of the 200 block of Upshur was largely quiet, save for a handful of women chatting in front of St. Mary Eritrean Church a few storefronts up. No farmer’s markets, no brunch spots, no bookstores, no thrift shops. Just a ten-minute walk from the bustle of Upshur’s 800 block,
the East end of Upshur is largely undeveloped, despite similarly being zoned for mixed use.

Why?

For a love shared: Mia joins the family

My children have held my broken promise of getting them a pet over my head for years. So when my daughter recently expressed interest in getting a dog, I told her that I would help pay for the dog. Maybe I could finally redeem myself for a slight committed during their childhood.
