The things that make up our history as a nation come right from our own neighborhood. Learn about Petworth's connection to the new National Museum of African American History and Culture.

With the grand opening and dedication of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), we see history being redefined and shaped right before our eyes.

Linda Crichlow-White is a well-known educator and author of “Back Then, There,” as well as being a former Petworth resident. While cleaning out her Aunt Edna’s DC apartment, Linda discovered old beauty products and supplies, posters, handbills and other significant items that she donated to the NMAAHC to add to their collection.

Cappy's Crabs gets a new concept and name

Ever since Crane & Turtle closed earlier this year, people have wondered what will be the new restaurant to replace it on Upshur Street. Owner Paul Ruppert opened a short-term concept for Chesapeake seafood called Cappy's Crabs; the plan was for Cappy's to close by Labor Day and for a new idea to open in that space.

Judge grants eviction for troubled 805 Rock Creek Church Road

For a long time now, the people living at 805 Rock Creek Church Road have been the focus of neighbor frustration and fears, as well as the attention of various law enforcement agencies. Between witnessing late night (and daylight) drug deals and a constant stream of people coming and going at the house that sits next to a popular daycare, frustrated residents began emailing MPD and city officials to do something about the property.

Residents wanted an end to the drugs, parents wanted safety for their children at Ideal Child Development Center next door, and MPD wanted to remove ongoing illegal activity.

Learn about lead in DC drinking water at Green Neighbors meeting Oct 3

Green Neighbors, a volunteer community group focused on environmental issues, is holding a community meeting (in conjunction with the Sierra Club) to discuss lead in the DC water system. The meeting is set for October 3rd at the Petworth Library from 6:30pm - 8pm. You can learn more about the issue and impact of lead in drinking water, and what you can do to make positive changes for yourself and the city.

Willow & Petworth Citizen: Upshur Street birthdays and anniversaries

Upshur Street has changed over the past half-decade, and most of that change is due to the efforts of places like Petworth Citizen and Willow Fashion, who both continue to serve the neighborhood with excellent food and retail options, while being good neighbors. Petworth Citizen is celebrating three years on Upshur, and Willow is celebrating four years. Hear from owners Paul Ruppert and Julie Wineinger (and celebrate with them this week and next!).

Paying attention to the wrong thing

The Washington Post picked up the story of ANC 4C Commissioner Taalib-Din Uqdah's idea of building walkways underneath Grant and Sherman Circles to ensure pedestrian safety. Unlike the Greater Greater Washington story that looked at the realistic problems with tunnels, the WaPo reporter, Perry Smith, doesn't do research into the issue on why pedestrian safety is a priority. Instead, she focuses on the wrong aspect, and calls the tunnel idea "interesting to envision." So are jetpacks. Jetpacks are interesting to envision, too. And they're just as unrealistic.

Broken street light? Get it fixed in a hurry this week with a text message.

Those buzzing orange or yellow street lights keep the stars hidden from view at night, but they also help keep people safe on the street and alleys. When they break, getting DC to fix them can be a real challenge, to put it mildly.

To help address that, the Mayor's office is pushing a "week-long effort to identify street light outages across the District," according to a press release sent out yesterday by the Mayor's office. Along with the street light initiative, they're also launching "Text to DC311" as a new way of reporting issues for repair.

Petworth teachers turn to crowd-funding to support their class projects

When school social worker Keri Sartin moved to her new office at West Education Campus, the room only had a couple of round tables and a few chairs. When I visited her a few weeks into the school year, she showed me the repurposed preschool cubbies she had scavenged and turned on their side to make shelves for the toys, games, and other supplies she uses to help anxious students feel more at ease.
