Pepco, grants and more: notes from ANC 4C July meeting

A quicker than usual Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting, ANC 4C ran through the agenda in an hour and a half, discussing Pepco issues, ANC Omnibus Act of 2016, CitiOpen tournament, the Office of the People’s Council, Slash Run, and a few grants.

Think yoga isn’t for you? Think again, says Lighthouse Yoga studio

Yoga is not just a passing fad. According to a recent study, 36.7 million people in the United States already practice yoga, up from 20.4 million in 2012. That means that over 10% of the US population now already takes yoga classes (or practices at home), and another 24% have said that they are likely to start practicing in the coming year!

Luckily, Petworth residents have an easy way to get started. Lighthouse Yoga Center, a small, community-oriented and locally-owned yoga studio located at 4203 9th Street NW, offers a 6-week course called Yoga Fundamentals that’s a great way to introduce you to the practice in a non-competitive and unintimidating way.

Mural completed at Twisted Horn, back patio now open

Twisted Horn cocktail bar at 819 Upshur St NW, owned by Jamie Leeds (who also owns Hank's Oyster Bar and Hank's Pasta Bar) has a beautiful new mural adorning the wall along its back patio. Created by local artist Nakisha Durrett, the mural is a lighthearted play on a "twisted fairytale theme."

Shooting at 5th & Allison St, one injured

At an intersection known for summertime fireworks and people hanging outside late at night, a loud staccato of bullet fire confused some, scared others and injured one young woman.

The shooting on Saturday night around 10:30pm at 5th and Allison St NW was witnessed by several people and heard by neighbors for blocks around. Reports tell of anywhere from 6 to 15 shots, and from witness accounts at the scene, the shooters used both a handgun and a rifle.

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4D meets on July 19th at 7pm at Truesdell Education Campus, 800 Ingraham St NW. Come hear Pepco try to justify the new rate increase now that they're owned by Exelon.

Meet Jonah Goodman, ANC 4C commissioner

Since Petworth News started last year, I’ve invited all sitting ANC 4C and 4D commissioners to participate in interviews in a series called “Better Know a Commissioner!” The goal is to help residents to get to know the people who volunteer their time to represent constituents needs on the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions.

Today I’m happy to introduce Jonah Goodman, who is the ANC Commissioner for ANC 4C in Single Member District 4C10. Jonah took the place of Kathleen Crowley, who resigned in early Spring of this year.

After a customer changed their child's diaper on a table at the restaurant, breaking the proverbial straw, Slash Run has created a new policy asking customers not to bring kids to the restaurant after 8pm.

Op-Ed: If a tree falls in Petworth and nobody hears it

(Ed note: Local resident Tom Burnett writes the following op-ed, with the hope to share thoughts about an old tree that he loved — and what it means to be a good neighbor.

Every day on my way to work I pass a beautiful, enormous black walnut tree in a back alley of Petworth. It stands watch over our rowhouses like a gentle giant, residing here since before our neighborhood was built over a century ago. Its trunk is so stout that it would take two people to wrap their arms around it.

To my horror, on my way home this week, I observed a work crew hauling away its decapitated branches, leaving nothing but a twelve foot tall stump in the ground.
