A visit to the Midlands in Park View

by Zina Abdelaziz

After much anticipation, the Midlands (3333 Georgia Avenue NW) officially opened its doors on November 8, 2016 in Park View. The beer garden boasts wide-open indoor and outdoor space as well as between 15-20 beers on tap, a selection of wines and classic mixed drinks. They have 5 TVs and two 100" projector screens that run Big 10 Network and a wide variety of other sports on an ongoing basis.

I had an opportunity to sit down with owners and fellow neighbors:  husband and wife Robin Webb and Trent Allen of Midlands, MI and Washington DC native, Peyton Sherwood.

The idea for the Midlands was hatched while “Having drinks at Duffy’s [Irish Bar and Pub]. We knew we wanted a large open space with a beer bar with taps as the central point."

Initially they were shown another space -- still in Park View -- but after a little bit of a “roller coaster ride” they would land at their current location which has offered them the best of both worlds in their indoor and outdoor spaces.

This trio came together around a “love of good beer.” Additionally, they each have extensive experience in the bar and restaurant business.  All three were partners and owners of Kangaroo Boxing Club and Robin and Trent are also behind the food truck “PORC” as well.

They tapped head brewer from Hellbender Beer, Ben Evans for help with designing/building their current tap system. The focus is on “really good beer.”

Think you’re not ready to pick from over 20 selections of beer? No worries, the bartenders and the owners love to help convert their patrons into beer aficionados by offering beer pairings, beer samples and lots of variety.

If you’ve taken a look at their website, you’ll notice that there is an extensive a beer menu -- but there is food! “Totally not pretentious” sandwiches that are carefully crafted to be delicious, full of high quality ingredients and well…. not pretentious.

When you visit the Midlands you'll find a selection of three or four sandwiches that change regularly based on the availability of high-quality ingredients and the chefs inspiration (there is always a vegetarian option). There is also a hand-crafted charcuterie picnic basket that’s great for “a date night” or just for the pleasure of it.

The Midlands is family- and dog-friendly. They offer a welcoming atmosphere for the kiddos by handing out coloring pages and crayons so kids can take a stab at creating their own version of the huge, vibrant mural by illustrator Mike Tannory that spans the entire right side of the building. Dogs are also welcome to hang out in their out door space with their beer drinking owners.

The place has a really chill vibe and welcoming atmosphere as well tons of seating, dartboards and billiards. Good beer, and good vibes right in the heart of Park View.

If you haven’t already, make your way over and check it out.

If you bring in your receipt from your purchase at Walls of Books you’ll receive a dollar off a drink! (See bartender for details.)
