Art of Noize’s newest exhibit, “Femmiliar,” opens on Saturday, April 10th. The opening reception will be on Saturday from 2-7pm. Art of Noize is located in the alley in the rear or 821 Upshur St NW.

The latest exhibit features Mercedes Sharps — mother, artist, hairstylist and beauty industry creative.

Ms. Sharp is a native of DC and describes her work as Afro-abstract with influences from the African Diaspora portrayed through color and motif.

Ms. Sharps plays with positive and negative spaces and uses hair textures on the canvas. Her work correlates the feelings and emotions many African American women have about the variation of their hair. “Femmiliar” serves as a constant reminder that there is always an exchange of energy between art and reality.

Art of Noize accepts visitors on Wednesday and Thursday from 11am-4pm, and Friday and Saturday from 12–6pm. Email Art of Noize to schedule an appointment at the gallery.

Art of Noize maintains its COVID-19 compliances with masks and physical distancing in the gallery.

Cesse Ip moved to DC in 2008, and in 2014 she and her husband decided to make Petworth their home. Petworth is where she found her best friends, her kids’ friends and her “people.” When she’s not working for the Department of Defense or chasing around her two small sons, she enjoys cooking, eating (especially when someone else is doing the cooking), reading and playing Settlers of Catan. A true nerd with two degrees in mathematics, writing came late to her, but she is looking forward to answering your questions about our community!
