Notes from Wednesday crime awareness meeting

The Metropolitan Police Department, along with representatives from Metro police, the Mayor's office, CM Todd's office and a few others attended a crime awareness meeting at the Petworth Library on Wednesday, March 30th. I wasn't able to attend, so big thanks to ANC 4C Commissioner Jonah Goodman for sharing his notes.

Get green with absinthe at Petworth Citizen and it's new #5thColumnThursdays

Absinthe was popular once in the United States, and then it became illegal (well, not really illegal, but regulated out of availability). But now this unusual spirit is back and ready for your enjoyment, and Chantal Tseng and Dan Searing are ready to wow you with it and many other interesting drinks every fifth Thursday evening in the Reading Room at Petworth Citizen. The first event is tomorrow, Thursday March 31st at 7pm.

It's always about being a good neighbor

It's always about being a good neighbor

A neighborhood is special because of the people who live there -- and it's made better by the people who help it thrive.

I came along Paul Montesano yesterday working on the median of New Hampshire Avenue with a rake and a pick-axe. Just one guy standing out in the middle of the road tearing up the weeds and grass.

"One person, a pick ax and five hours for a roughly 20 foot length of median," he said. "Hopefully this works out. Could be cool."

Blue chairs totally belong on the police & fire call boxes

Blue chairs totally belong on the police & fire call boxes

So this seems like it's a thing now.

Walking around the Petworth neighborhood, I discovered someone is attaching small blue chairs to the tops of a couple of the old fire and police call boxes. And I approve! Love the street art nature of it. Here's a bit of back story on the historic call boxes...

Toli Moli does another pop-up day featuring their acclaimed falooda

Toli Moli does another pop-up day featuring their acclaimed falooda

The mother-daughter team that makes up Toli Moli, Jocelyn Law-Yone and Simone Jacobson, are having another pop-up restaurant event, this time in Columbia Heights at Thip Khao (3462 14th Street NW) on Tuesday, March 29th, from 3:00pm – 10:00 pm. Their authentic layered dessert falooda drinks were met with a lot of love when they did a pop-up at Eat's Place back in January.

Now, they are looking to "sweeten snack time with the introduction of Burmese tea leaf salad and two new falooda flavors: Cherry Blossom and Bourbon-Cassis."

This week's Featured Listing of the Week comes from Yianni Konstantopoulos, one of the very first Sponsors of Petworth News when it launched last June. Yianni is offering a beautiful penthouse condo at 700 Quincy Street NW. It's really a nice home, it's close to Metro, shopping and restaurants and it even has off-street parking. I doubt it'll be on the market for long.

Attic DC: a Petworth resident is trying to help you shop DC’s independent antique and fashion retail

Writing about people like Tarek Anandan is one of the things I like best about writing Petworth News: profiling a local resident who is following his heart, doing something exceptional, and someone you might otherwise not have realized lived a few doors down from you.

Tarek and his wife Valentine combined their professional and personal passions and launched ATTIC DC, a website that promotes local, independently owned antique and fashion retail here in Petworth and around the city. Read more about Tarek and ATTIC...
