Community Cornerstone award recognizes Paul Ruppert and three other DC residents

Each month, one of my favorite people on the DC Council, At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds, gives out awards recognizing members of the DC community who "make an extraordinary impact to the quality of life and general well-being of the residents of the District of Columbia." Recipients are nominated by other DC residents, and selected by CM Bonds' office. This month, Petworth's own Paul Ruppert was one of the three recipient's of the Community Cornerstone awards.

Slim's gets an opening date, new 3rd Floor available

I think it's safe to say that Petworth area residents have been waiting in anticipation for the opening of Slim's Diner (4201 Georgia Avenue NW) for quite some time. After home invasion scare at 14th & Upshur, DC Redditors offer advice

After home invasion scare at 14th & Upshur, DC Redditors offer advice

There is an interesting thread on the DC subreddit about an attempted home break-in last night near Upshur and 14th Street. Reddit user itsmywanderingmind writes that her roommate came home late at night, and was followed by a man back to their shared house. The man tried to open the door several times, the roommates called MPD, but the man ended up leaving before police arrived.

The roommates found themselves a bit frozen with what to do ("standing around frantically" is the pretty descriptive phrase she used in her post). Commenters on Reddit made some suggestions on what to do...

For sale: An old vacant house that hard work made a family home once again

For sale: An old vacant house that hard work made a family home once again

When Jed and Scott bought in Petworth in 2009, the house they chose on Upshur Street needed a lot of work. It hadn’t been well-maintained, hadn’t been updated in decades and was sitting vacant with holes in the walls and ceilings. In a lot of ways, the house was representative of many other Petworth homes — built for a family, cycled through numerous hands over the years, left vacant and in disrepair, and now restored to a family home through hard work.

Crane & Turtle to close in April, Ruppert thinking of what's to come

According to Paul Ruppert, the critically (and customer) acclaimed Crane & Turtle restaurant (828 Upshur St NW) is planning to close on April 24th.

"Crane & Turtle is so directly tied to [Chef Makoto Hamamura] that we decided it makes sense to create a new restaurant," co-owner Paul Ruppert told me. "Brainstorming ideas right now. Happy to have suggestions."

PSA: Street cleaning - and ticketing - starts March 1st
