Alfie’s opens on Tuesday & it’s great

The new Thai / Southeast Asian restaurant by Food Network Star chef Alex McCoy and his partners Marc Dosik and Hunter Campbell, is ready to go. They had a soft launch party last night, and the food and the drink, unsurprisingly, are great. It’s just not on Upshur Street, not yet anyway.

I stopped by Alfie’s early in the day to talk with Hunter Campbell and Alex McCoy about the upcoming opening, and their plans for the Mothership and Upshur locations.

Too good to be true: Careful when you buy from Craigslist

MPD reached out to me this week with a story of a deal that sounds too good to be true, and a deal gone bad. And they're asking you to be more careful.

Earlier this week, there was a robbery on the 700 block of Quincy St NW that started with a Craigslist ad for an iPad 2 for only $150. Sounds great, right? They agreed to meet on Quincy Street so the buyer could pay for the iPad. Instead, this happened:

A look at a new Roosevelt: a long-overdue renovation

Theodore Roosevelt High School has been closed since 2013 to undergo a $136.1 million renovation that replaces the crumbling sections of the building, restores historic architecture, and expands the facilities and technology, all revolving around a new central atrium. Author reading about civil rights activist and judge Loren Miller

One of the benefits of having a literary establishment in our neighborhood is the opportunity to meet writers and historians and listen to author readings of their work.

On Wednesday, February 3rd at 7pm, Upshur Street Books (827 Upshur St NW) is hosting Dr. Amina Hassan, who will read from her new book, Loren Miller: Civil Rights Attorney and Journalist.

Check out the renovated Roosevelt High School on Saturday, Jan 30th

Roosevelt High School has been undergoing renovations for a long time, and has been the source of some community frustration, as current Roosevelt students have been stuck over in MacFarland Middle School. MacFarland had a host of problems that DCPS and the city finally fixed after some loud parent and community complaints.

Now DCPS is inviting parents and members of the community to tour the renovated school.

Ah, the alleys... full of 20 feet of immovable snow (or at least, that's what it seems like). But what about your full trash and recycle cans? When are they going to be collected? Elections, Collections and more: ANC 4D January meeting notes

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4D had its January meeting on Tuesday the 19th. Overall it was a pretty interesting meeting, with Khalil Thompson announcing an office change, DPW acting Director Christopher Shorter discussing snow, trash and ticketing, the FD/EMS Chief making an appearance and a rather quick election of officers.
