The Petworth Market in doing great today. I grabbed a few photos (below) and talked with a few vendors. You should definitely check out Black Pug Smokehouse if you get a chance today. They’re only at the Petworth Market 6 times this summer, as they are part of the Union Kitchen rotation.

Bus stop argument leads to assault and abduction charges

Bus stop argument leads to assault and abduction charges

At Wednesday's ANC 4C monthly meeting (5/13), Commissioner John-Paul Hayworth reported an alleged attempted abduction had occurred recently at a bus stop next to E.L. Haynes Public Charter School. Obviously, this freaked me out when I heard about it, so I looked into the situation and wanted to share what I found out.

The short version is that it appears to have been a physical altercation between a pre-teen boy and a man getting onto the #63 bus at Kansas avenue near EL Haynes (occurred next to, not at the school).

Strawberry Festival at St. Paul's Episcopal Church June 13th

There are a lot of fun festivals and activities happening around Petworth in the upcoming weeks. Two schools are having events (EL Haynes and Powell both have festivals on May 30th), and Celebrate Petworth is June 6th.

Plus, the 149th Annual Strawberry Festival at St. Paul's Episcopal Church (i.e. the church in Rock Creek Cemetery) is happening on June 13th.

It sounds like a fun time for families of all sizes and ages. They plan on having pony rides, arts and crafts, music, moon bounces and a climbing wall.

Plus, the ever-popular tours of historic Rock Creek Cemetery.

Oh, and Strawberries. ;)

Save the Date:
Saturday, June 13, from 4-8 p.m.
201 Allison St. NW

Arsenal of Democracy Flyover

No, it's not World War 2 again... it's a massive flyover of vintage WW2 bombers and fighter.

If you're downtown near the National Mall or along the flightpath, go out around noon to see the "Arsenal of Democracy Flyover" dominate the DC skyline. (They should be over the Lincoln Memorial by 12:10pm, headed over the Mall and then left after the Capitol.)

You can check out the list of formations that you will see coming in over the city. And here is the official Arsenal of Democracy Flyover Fact Sheet (pdf).

And here's a cool Plane-Spotting Guide to help you identify the planes (over 70 are scheduled to participate). Considering these are all prop-planes, it should be LOUD and glorious.

Update -- now with far away pix!

Petworth Community Market Fundraiser a successful evening at Chez Billy

Petworth Community Market Fundraiser a successful evening at Chez Billy

The Petworth Community Market fundraiser was this evening at Chez Billy, and I think it was a total success! There had to be more than 200 people who came out to support the Market, and there were dozens of items up for auction to help the Market serve the community.

"The money raised tonight supports the fees we have to pay to the city for permits, meters, insurance and more," said Erin Lane, the president of the Market's Board. "Plus, it helps us to serve neighbors in need by affording us the ability to double SNAP/WIC payments."

"The event raises enough funds to cover 30%-40% of our annual operating costs," continued Erin. “It’s great to see this place packed with so many people, and to have them all out to support the Market and the community,” she said.
