Street Sense gets a new look, and new vests to help you find them

Street Sense Media, the media center devoted to empowering those experiencing homelessness in Washington DC, has some changes coming. You probably recognize their homeless and formerly homeless newspaper vendors by their neon vests, which have become a staple of DC neighborhoods.  Now the newspaper and the vests of homeless Street Sense vendors are changing. Here’s why.

Uncensored DC: The Library takes a creative approach to Banned Books Week

Censorship is never acceptable in a democracy, which is why the DC Public Library is celebrating Banned Books Week with a creative campaign called #UNCENSOREDDC. The theme this year is “Texts Against Tyranny,” and the Library is doing a scavenger hunt and hiding books that have been censored at one time or another across the District, along with a cool fundraiser in the Dupont Underground. Banned Books week is September 24-30th. Details inside.

A faulty meter or a leaky toilet... which is the culprit for high water bills?

A faulty meter or a leaky toilet... which is the culprit for high water bills?

Last week Petworth News published an article about Petworth residents who discovered inordinately high water bills after DC Water replaced their water meters. One resident, Jonathan Nobil, had a water bill showing more than 29,000 gallons being used last month -- water he contends they didn't use.

Now there's talk that it may be a faulty meter causing the problem.

DC Water followed up with an email to Mr. Nobil on Thursday afternoon with a veiled threat, and to Petworth News with an angry email suggesting we not publish a follow-up.

Meter mayhem: Petworth residents get hosed with high water charges, DC Water says bills are accurate

DC Water is replacing some 85,000 water meters around the city this year, in an effort to increase the accuracy of water readings. But the effort seems to have backfired for some Petworth residents, who have recently been hit with monthly water bills four times higher than what they usually pay.

Hateful flyers appear in Brightwood and north; donate a dollar for every flyer?

I debated publicizing this when I first heard about it a few days ago, as I don’t want to give the lowlife who’s posting the hateful flyers attention, because that’s what this idiot wants (that, and to scare people). But people need to know how to respond and trash this crap.

Made of gold? Roofless house listed at $499,999 in Brightwood

File this in the you-ain't-seen-it-all file, or the greed-ahead-of-common-sense folder, but a house is listed for sale in Brightwood that has no roof. It's a shell of a house that DCRA put a stop work order on last year for "illegal construction / working without a permit," according to an article Washingtonian.

They're asking $499,999 for this opposite of a turn-key structure.

A great opportunity: Apply to attend the US Park Police Citizens' Academy

I participated in the first Academy back in October 2016 and found it to be a fascinating experience and look into one of the oldest police departments in the United States -- one that started with only two officers!

I highly recommend participating in the Academy.
