How to recycle your Christmas tree with DPW

Did you have a real tree this Christmas? Don’t throw it out!

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) has sent out info on where to put your Christmas tree so that it can be picked up for composting. Don’t bag the tree, put in along the curb box (not in the street or on the sidewalk).

DPW wants you to call 311 to schedule your “Holiday Greenery” pickup now through January 10th. (Note that DPW does not provide collection services for apartment and condominium buildings with four or more units.)

You don’t have to have an appointment. DPW will collect items on Wednesdays between January 13-31. Or you can drop off your tree for composting between January 2-31 at any of the locations listed on the DPR website. (The closest is Ft Totten: 4900 Bates Road NE, open 9am to 4pm.)

Reminder: Put trees and greenery out front without lights or ornaments - and not bagged.

Trees and greenery collected or dropped off after January 31 will not be composted.
