DDOT just announced Park(ing) Day will take place on Friday, September 17th from 9am to 4pm this year. Applications from residents, businesses and community organizations will be accepted until August 27th. Last year because of the pandemic, Park(ing) Day was concentrated in a few areas across the city.

Originally started in San Francisco, Park(ing) Day is used to reimagine how public spaces like street parking can be activated for people rather than vehicle parking. In the past, pop-up parklets have been used for fitness classes, community meetings, art, showcases for upcoming projects and programs, expanded seating areas, and changed how DC streets are used.

Businesses, organizations and residents can apply to take over a parking spot.

The application requires a short, written description of how the space will be used, as well as information about how the site will be enclosed on all sides (not facing the sidewalk).

The location must be a metered location, and streets that are subject to rush hour restrictions are not eligible.

While it is okay to advocate for an issue, or have a sign that says “This park is brought to you by XYZ Organization,” DDOT says they do not want the parklets to look like a trade show booth. Restaurants also cannot provide table service or serve customers in the space.

The Park(ing) Day 2021 application fee is $55, but all meter fees are waived for this year’s event. Visit DDOT for more information about how to apply.
