Good news for lovers of Lulabelle's Sweet Shop, Cheesemonster, and local grocery shopping

Lulabelle’s Sweet Shop, the ever-popular ice cream destination at 847 Upshur Street NW, is set to reopen for in-store shopping on Tuesday, June 8th. When COVID-19 restrictions hit, Lulabelle’s pivoted to offering grocery shopping and other necessities. The line down the block every Saturday told the story of residents who wanted easy access to quality foods, including ice cream and bagels.

Now, with Covid restrictions relaxing but the demand for quality shopping remaining high, Lulabelle’s has decided to expand the small sweets shop to include a full-service specialty grocery, featuring products from local vendors like Lancaster Farms, MoonValley Cooperative, Karma Farms, South Mountain Creamery, Lost Sock Roasters, Taharka Bros, Pluma Baked Goods, Whatsa Bagel, Local Deli Meats, and Lyon Bakery Bread. Lulabelle’s has also expanded its selection of housemade grab-and-go products, while still maintaining their ice cream and coffee offerings along with custom cakes by in-house baker, Chris Tibbs.

Additionally, Lulabelles has teamed up with Petworth’s own Cinder BBQ/JDM Sandwiches to create an exclusive line of cold cuts.

“COVID was tough, but returning to in-store shopping means we have a real opportunity to offer something completely different to our little part of Petworth,” said Julie Wineinger, owner and operator of Lulabelle’s. “Our customers pushed us to do more and think differently during the pandemic. That work is paying off in the form of some fresh and exciting new offerings at the store but don’t worry ice cream is never going away! We will still be serving Taharka Brothers ice cream at the counter!”

In addition to these locally sourced and produced goods, Lulabelle’s is announcing a collaboration with Cheesemonster, a woman-owned cheese company based in DC specializing in curated cheese selections. (Ed note: Cheesemonster recently closed from Kennedy Street and was searching for a new home.)

“We are thrilled to announce a new collaboration with Cheesemonster,” said Julie. “Alice Bergen Phillips, owner and founder of Cheesemonster, will be curating a select assortment of imported and domestic cheeses which will be available at Lulabelle's grab and go market. This limited selection will rotate frequently and highlight seasonal items, as well as limited edition and hard-to-come by cheeses. Retail items can be ordered using Lulabelle's online shop, or picked up in the market during open hours.”

Among its unique offerings, Lulabelle’s is launching a weekly pre-ordered cheeseboard program. Carefully and beautifully constructed, each Cheesemonster cheeseboard is like a delicious, ephemeral work of art, using only the freshest and most delicious ingredients. Each board will include cheese, charcuterie, fresh produce, dried fruit, pickled/cured veggies, and crunchies. Orders must be placed by Thursday afternoons at 6pm for pick up on Saturdays after 12pm.

The extended hours will begin on Tuesday, June 8th at 9am for ice cream, coffee and sundries through our walk-up window. In-store shopping will officially begins on Friday, June 11th at 9am.

Lulabelle’s customers can continue to order groceries online for same day pick up or shop in store (masks required) during their new hours. During peak hours, ice cream, sundaes and milkshakes can be ordered from our curbside window to keep their youngest fans safe! Indoor seating has been removed to make space for the expanded inventory.
