Help name the New North Middle School in Ward 4

A rendering of New North Middle School

by Yuliya Panfil

Calling Petworth creatives: a new middle school is set to open on the former campus of Coolidge High School in Takoma, and DC Government needs your help naming it.

The school, currently under a provisional name of “New North Middle School”, will open for the 2019-2020 academic year. The DCPS school planning team is asking for the public to submit name nominations.

Here are the rules:

  • The name must be based on a person or a place.
  • If a person, they subject must be deceased for at least 2 years (sorry, no Barrack Obama Middle School) and the name must be the person’s given name and surname (so, no Prince Middle School either).
  • The name must symbolize a contribution to society, and "lend prestige and status" to an institution of learning.
  • The name must represent "DCPS mission, vision, and values" (I’m not really sure what that means but perhaps this site will elucidate this particular requirement).

Submit your ideas!

DCPS is currently accepting nominations online:

The deadline has not yet been set, but will likely be between 8/20 and 9/3. DCPS expects to approve the new name in November 2018.

So, Petworth namestormers, whatcha got? Submit your ideas online, or leave them in the comment section for the peanut gallery.
