Last week, a pair of angel wings appeared on the wall between EL Torogoz and the shuttered 777 Market, on 9th Street between Upshur and Varnum Streets.

A few days later, a mysterious sign went up next door, above the cute little space that was a once the short-lived On Consignment variety shop.

“Aviator Club”

Nope, it’s not a flight school. Turns out, the neighborhood is getting an artsy new retail and shoe store.

Justin Heron, the artist behind the wings, will open Aviator Club on November 20, in partnership with his brother Jamaul. The shop will be open seven days a week, from 10am to 8pm.

Justin plans to sell men’s and women's clothing as well as custom and exclusive sneakers including Yeazys, Jordan 1s, Nike SB Dunks and other brands.

“We’re gonna have the most exclusive sneakers that you can't find anywhere,” Justin boasts.

The shop will also have skate decks, accessories and “other cool stuff.”

A home contractor by trade, Justin says he’s long had a passion for art and fashion. Aviator Club is his first foray into the industry. While Justin won’t be selling art at first, he says the shop will decorated with artwork from himself and other artists.

Why the name, Aviator Club? Justin says he’s a long-time BMW enthusiast, and it turns out BMW got its start making airplanes.

“I also think I’m a pretty fly dude,” Justin laughs.

Aviator Club’s grand opening on November 20 will feature a DJ, food and a life raffle. Sign up for the raffle by following Aviator Club on Instagram (@aviatorclubdc). The first prize is a pair of Yeazy 350 sneakers.
