Large police response to Monroe and 10th on Monday night

If you saw a helicopter circling and SWAT-like MPD trucks racing up Georgia and New Hampshire Avenues on Monday night, it wasn't a gang war or response to a terror threat. As one reader tweeted tonight:

Looked like a full police assault force went through NH Ave and Georgia. Like a motorcade but with APCs.

MPD was responding to a call regarding a man on a roof who was threatening to injure or kill himself.

Described by MPD as a “mental health consumer” (the city's term for someone having a psychiatric crisis or in need of psychiatric medical assistance), the man barricaded himself on the roof of his parent's home and allegedly threatened to hurt or kill himself.  MPD’s Emergency Response Team negotiators were able to get him to come off the roof peacefully.

The man was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, where he remains this evening.

According to MPD, criminal charges for domestic issues are also pending (looks like the charges stem from an issue in the home, including destruction of property).

Thanks to everyone who tweeted and emailed!
