Join Slash Run & Brittany Kademian for a cancer research fundraiser

Brittany Kademian is getting ready to run the Boston marathon on April 18th in honor of those who are fighting cancer. Working with the “Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge” program, Brittany’s goal is to reach $10,000 in donations for cancer research and cancer care for those that need it most. Brittany is partnering with Petworth’s own Slash Run (201 Upshur St NW) to hold a fundraiser this Thursday, February 25th (5pm -12am).

Alas, I was too sick to attend the February meeting of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4D — however, 4D Secretary Nancy Roth was kind enough to send me her draft minutes from the meeting for those who couldn’t attend.

New Real Estate section coming soon

A new feature is launching this week, called Petworth News Real Estate. This new section of the site will offer a hyperlocal look at property listings for homes for sale in the Petworth area. I think it's gonna be pretty cool.

Security camera rebates begin, just not for Petworth (updated: now it does!)

When it was first announced, the idea behind the “Private Security Camera Incentive Program” was if you buy an outdoor security camera, DC would provide a rebate to cover the cost. All residents, businesses and churches were eligible — but now that the program launched this week, it seems not everyone is eligible, especially if you live in Petworth.

Escalators, pipelines & sense of the ANC: Notes from February ANC 4C meeting

A few interesting things at this 4C Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting, including finding out about the 45-week closing of the East side of the Georgia Ave metro station, the upcoming development at 3701 14th Street, a resolution to honor certain DC residents and upcoming DC Water pipeline work in the area.

Metro to close GA Ave escalators for 45 weeks

WMATA representatives attended the ANC 4C meeting on Wednesday, February 10th to announce that the East side entrance of the Georgia Avenue / Petworth station will be closed for 45 weeks to replace the escalators. No, I didn't misplace the hyphen, it's forty-five weeks.

As DC General closes, new homeless shelter to open at 5th & Kennedy

DC's main homeless shelter, DC General, is set to close so the city can create new, smaller shelters in each Ward. Located in the Southeast, DC General has 285 rooms serving more than 700 homeless families each year. In an effort to provide smaller, safer and more dignified housing options (with the services and supports that help families get back on their feet), DC believes new shelters are needed.

FD/EMS Medical Director resigns with a letter outlining dire issues

In a scathingly critical letter that outlines the ongoing problems in DC's Fire and EMS system, Medical Director Jullette Saussy resigned her position as Assistant Fire Chief. The letter, dated January 29th and sent to Mayor Muriel Bowser, provides insight into the problems that are making the emergency medical response ability of the District not only ineffective, but life-threatening.
