For sale: An old vacant house that hard work made a family home once again

When Jed and Scott bought in Petworth in 2009, the house they chose on Upshur Street needed a lot of work. It hadn’t been well-maintained, hadn’t been updated in decades and was sitting vacant with holes in the walls and ceilings. In a lot of ways, the house was representative of many other Petworth homes — built for a family, cycled through numerous hands over the years, left vacant and in disrepair, and now restored to a family home through hard work.

Crane & Turtle to close in April, Ruppert thinking of what's to come

According to Paul Ruppert, the critically (and customer) acclaimed Crane & Turtle restaurant (828 Upshur St NW) is planning to close on April 24th.

"Crane & Turtle is so directly tied to [Chef Makoto Hamamura] that we decided it makes sense to create a new restaurant," co-owner Paul Ruppert told me. "Brainstorming ideas right now. Happy to have suggestions."

PSA: Street cleaning - and ticketing - starts March 1st

Ah, the approach of Spring in DC… when the weather begins to warm up, then gets cold again, then warms up… and you have to move your car to the other side of the street.

DPW street cleaning and alternate side of the street parking begins Tuesday, March 1st (through October 31st). DPW will give out warning tickets until Friday, March 4th — after that, it’s a $45 ticket if you’re parked on the side being cleaned. Or you could get towed.

Security camera rebates begin, just not for Petworth (updated: now it does!)

When it was first announced, the idea behind the “Private Security Camera Incentive Program” was if you buy an outdoor security camera, DC would provide a rebate to cover the cost. All residents, businesses and churches were eligible — but now that the program launched this week, it seems not everyone is eligible, especially if you live in Petworth.

A few interesting things at this 4C Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting, including finding out about the 45-week closing of the East side of the Georgia Ave metro station, the upcoming development at 3701 14th Street, a resolution to honor certain DC residents and upcoming DC Water pipeline work in the area.
