The last Saturday of every summer month sees the free Petworth Jazz Project at the park at 8th and Taylor. If you're looking for another free, outdoor jazz show that's great for the whole family, The Parks at Walter Reed has a series great jazz shows starting this weekend, Saturday, July 21st from 4-7pm.

The shows are presented by The Parks at Walter Reed, working with Petworth's own local jazzman Tom Pipkin -- which means it'll be a great show for neighbors to come out and enjoy.

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4C passed a resolution at their July meeting supporting a complaint filed with ABRA by seven civic and religious leaders requesting the Trump International Hotel offer proof why it shouldn’t have its alcohol license revoked. The rationale for the license revocation? Trump isn’t a man of “good character,” according to the complaint.

National Zoo wants to reduce entrances from 13 to 3, add security gates. What do you think?

The Smithsonian Institute is proposing to put up vehicle fencing and to reduce the number of entrances at the National Zoo from 13 down to three, and adding security gates up as well.

Greater Greater Washington has put up a petition to get the National Capital Planning Commission to deny the changes.

Alex said he was riding his bike in the designated bike lane around Grant Circle around 7:45pm on July 4th when a green Jeep sped around him aggressively. The Jeep's right quarter panel ended up colliding with him, knocking him to the ground and severely damaging his bike. He received injuries to his hands and knees.

After a half century in the trenches, popular DCPS administrator prepares for the retirement bell

Ted Hinton, Jr. has spent 50 years with the District of Columbia Public School System (DCPS), serving as a teacher, an administrator, and overall mentor to thousands of students, parents and teachers who have come through the doors of the District’s school system.

In the last half century at DCPS, Hinton estimates he has touched the lives of more than 85,000 students, creating a lasting legacy of learning, self-improvement and success. And, now as Hinton, the Dean of Culture at Powell Bilingual Elementary School in Petworth, prepares to retire on August 4th, he is especially proud of the impact he has had on current and former students.

“It is hard to believe 50 years have gone by,” says Hinton. “It doesn’t feel like 50 years because I enjoyed what I have been doing and working with kids has kept me youthful.”

Gun violence affects every person who lives in DC in some way. Some are scared when they hear about a recent shooting close to home, some are grieving when they hear a loved one is killed. 

A group of residents and local Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners came up with the idea of bringing together the community to talk about what neighbors are feeling in a local gun violence summit on Saturday, June 23rd from 10am to 1pm at the Emery Heights Recreation Center (5701 Georgia Ave NW).

Rules of the pools... what you need to know about using DPR community pools

The Department of Parks and Recreation has 21 outdoor pools and 11 indoor pools, and they all have the same rules for using them, including what you can wear, what toys you can bring into the water, and what you can do while there. If you don't follow the rules, you could be asked to leave.

That happened on June 9th to a teen that one person said had been doing nothing but sitting on a lounge chair and had not attempted to go swimming, and another witness says the teen was verbally abusive and left on her own.
