Live east of Georgia Ave in Petworth? Then you might be interested to know that PSA 404 has a new lieutenant. I found out today that Lt Michael Whiteside was transferred to 3D last week. The new 404 manager is Lt. Kenneth Hargrove.

I reached out to the LT today to welcome him to Petworth. Lt Hargrove said he was happy to be in 4D (this was his first week here on the job) and that he is assigned to the midnight tour of duty.

Lt Hargrove has 26 years with MPD and is a life-long DC resident. He added that he looks forward to working with the citizens in PSA 404. You can reach him at kenneth.hargrove@dc.gov.

I'm sure he'll be at the next PSA 404 meeting on May 29th at 801 Shepherd Street.

I went to the Ward 4 Candidates Forum at the Takoma Baptist Church this evening. While I'm not posting any notes from the forums or endorsing any candidates, I thought you might want to see some photos of the candidates during the event. **Note: I'm not posting or endorsing because I also run the http://bit.ly/17jDEC2 website, and I believe ensuring the neutrality of that site is important. So make sure you visit it often!

Not sure what to make of this (the idea OR the primary color picture). Michael Neibauer, who's an economic development reporter with the Washington Business Journal (and whose Twitter profile says "Permits are my thing.") sent out this tweet and odd rendering image for 16 Grant Circle...

@WBJNeibs "16 Grant Circle, subject of recent raze permit, will be redeveloped as 3 flats (6 units)"

I drove by the location today and it seems they're getting ready to work. Screen shot of the DCRA permit tracking page for the property is below as well.

Petworth is lucky to have its own Community Farmer's Market, and even better, it's opening next month! It's one of the local events that helps us all enjoy our neighborhood and our neighbors. And they could use your support. Also, there's gonna be beer!

Ok, I don't mean beer at the Market, but at an upcoming Silent Auction Fundraiser at Chez Billy.

It's Monday the 20th, 6:30pm - 9:30pm. The Market will have the bar all to itself that night, and you can enjoy some great drink specials.

To attend the event, buy an admission ticket (comes with 2 door prize tickets) for $15, or two admission tickets for $25 (and get 4 door prizes).

Then come in and bid on some great items. Silently. With a drink.

** Buy your ticket here: http://bit.ly/1GFeU4j **

100% of the money raised from the event goes into running the market. So join your neighbors to in supporting this awesome project, and take advantage of some great drink specials.

The Market opens May 2nd from 9 am – 1 pm and then every Saturday though November. You'll be able to enjoy plenty of food and produce, as well as goods from local vendors. Each week they’ll feature events that are great for the entire family including live music, storytelling, cooking demos, and more.

For more information check out their website:

A great neighbor finally gets awarded for being awesome. Local Petworth resident and amazing neighbor Carol Herwig is being recognized by Casey Trees with their Award for Partnership at the 2015 Canopy Awards. The award ceremony is April 23rd at Dock 5 at Union Market. (see below for link with more details)

Carol is a very deserving recipient of this award, which recognizes her leadership, time, effort, sweat equity and can-do attitude to ensure that Petworth, and all of DC, has the tree canopy cover it needs.

I spoke to Carol tonight about the award today. She was very flattered that she was nominated by her peers, and that the foundation selected her for the award. “I found out Monday that the award was official,” said Carol. “I feel real good about it, and appreciate that I was selected.”

According to Casey Trees, Carol can be credited for adding more than 250 trees to Petworth. She was also instrumental in the redesign of the park area between Georgia Avenue and 9th Street (below Upshur). The final design used by the city was very close to the early designs for the land that Carol submitted. She also works regularly with the Armed Services Retirement Home and the Rock Creek Cemetery. (As a matter of fact, this weekend she’s helping the Friends of the Soldiers Home plant 50 new trees at the AFRH. 86 people have volunteered to help plant the trees, and that doesn’t include staff.)

“It’s about the community connections and impact,” Carol said, in talking about why she works as hard as she does. “Getting different groups together from around the area is the way it should be. It doesn’t have to be one person throwing seeds into the wind in order to get things accomplished.”

As Casey Trees points out in their overview of Carol, she “has tirelessly sought out planting projects in the neighborhood, approaching groups and institutions about adding trees to their property using Casey Trees’ Community Tree Planting program and working with them to develop strong planting plans and spearhead the planting and post-planting care.”

Carol said that at this point, it’s rewarding to be able to “go to any ward and know that I’ve planted trees that are thriving. That’s especially true for here in Petworth.”

Carol is also involved with other volunteer efforts, including roles as vice president of the Friends at the Library, a board member at the Georgia Avenue Family Support Cooperative (where’s she been on the board since 2008), along with being the treasurer of the citywide Federation of Friends of the DC Public Libraries. (BTW, the GA Ave Family Support Cooperative is looking for new board members, as well as a CPA to volunteer with them. The Cooperative helps homeless families find housing and get out of DC General, as well as works to keep kids in school and not truant.)

Frankly, Carol is deserving of any award that recognizes her dedication to Petworth. Along with her husband, George Morgan, they have both spent countless hours tending the trees and flowers around Petworth, and picking up trash on a regular basis. Carol and George are inspirational neighbors who work hard to make Petworth a great neighborhood. I know ANC 4C has been thinking of starting their own awards program for local active residents, Carol and George make two great recipients.

Read more about Carol’s accomplishments and the award at the Canopy Awards overview page: http://bit.ly/1Fe505J

And if you want to attend the Awards and Fundraiser, here’s more info: http://bit.ly/1NUIpBJ

Three cheers for Carol! She's an outstanding neighbor to everyone in Petworth.

The Celebrate Petworth Indiegogo fund features various perks you can get when you support the festival. What are you waiting for? Go support the festival!

Perks include t-shirts from Upshur Street Books & Celebrate Petworth, gift certificates to Crane And Turtle DC (wait, those are sold out already!?!), a special discounted shopping night with Willow and much more from local retailers, artists and restaurants.

AND CHECK THIS OUT: there's even the opportunity to have Petworth News write an exclusive article or interview with you or about a topic of your choice (well, within reason obviously). It's at the $250 funding level and goes a long way to helping cover the permit expenses (and bear in mind, no money comes to me, it all goes to the festival).

One article is already sold, only one left! Thanks to Yianni Konstantopoulos from GreenLine Real Estate (3927 Georgia Ave NW www.greenlinere.com) for supporting the festival! I look forward to writing an article of your choice!

If you own a restaurant or a store, or want to highlight a local event, consider funding the festival by getting an article on Petworth News. I currently reach more than 4,000 people a day, which includes local residents and prospective neighbors, Councilmembers, even a Congressional Representative or two.

Here's a cool opportunity I want to share: Paul Dolinsky, an extremely knowledgable friend of mine, is participating in giving a tour of the historic Belmont Mansion in Dupont Circle. I'm very familiar with the mansion, and have toured it privately in the past. It's a really cool mansion, with some great hidden features and a great history.

If you have the chance to play tourist in your own city, take this tour.

====== Tour Info

Join us as we take a in-depth historic journey through The Belmont Manison lead by Alma Bane, PGM the Right Worthy Grand Secretary of the Easternstar and Paul Dolinsky from the National Park Service. Then explore its roof restoration with Chuck Wagner from Wagner Roofing.

Located in the heart of Dupont Circle, the Beaux-Arts mansion was constructed between 1906 and 1909 as a winter home for Perry Belmont and his family. The residence was designed by French architect Ernest Sanson along with Horace Trumbauer, who served as supervising architect. The mansion served as the social center of Washington when the Belmont’s were in residence. In 1935, the building was sold to the General Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and is maintained and resided in by the acting Right Worthy Grand Secretary.

Inside the Belmont: April 11th, 10:00am to 1:00pm The Belmont Mansion International Headquarters for the Order of the Eastern Star 1618 New Hampshire Avenue, NW Metro Station: Dupont Circle

DCPL and APT Member: $15 Non Members: $25

Update on Grant Circle Historic Landmark status: Looks like the local neighborhood effort to protect the homes and buildings around Grant Circle was successful.

Commissioner Joe Martin emailed that "This morning the Historic Preservation Review Board unanimously voted their 'intent to nominate' Grant Circle as a historic district.

"The motion that passed exempted St. Gabriel's Church and buildings on its 'campus' while Board members encouraged Father Avelino Gonzalez, the pastor, and the parish to consider pursuing historic landmark status for the Church's property."

Looks like the local neighborhood effort to protect the styles of homes and buildings around Grant Circle was successful.

St Gabriel's is pictured below.

Car fire at New Hampshire Ave and Upshur Street tonight around 11:15pm. MPD said a neighbor called it in. I spoke to her and she said was walking her dog along Upshur, and saw the car burst into flames approximately around 11:15. She said saw one person standing at the corner of 5th and Upshur when the car went up, and said that person walked away (either didn't care, or something else). The fire department looked to be concentrating on the engine compartment. I wasn't able to get closer or ask questions as don't have my MPD press pass (yet).

Resident Stephen Davis shared a great pic of the Presidential Marine squadron's MV-22 Osprey looping over Petworth this morning (much better than the far away shot I managed to grab). Stephen mentioned it was the "first time I've seen those circling the neighborhood that I can recall. Louder than the usual chopper!"

I hadn't seen the Ospreys flying over Petworth before this, but I know that HMX-1 squadron (the Marine Helicopter Squadron One, the Presidential Squadron) was getting the twin rotor Ospreys back in 2013 to complement and eventually replace the Sikorsky helicopters already in use.

Here's an article about the Osprey joining HMX-1:
