It's the neighbors who help make a place be a welcoming neighborhood

This is the story of how I fell in love with Petworth (and why I decided to start writing for Petworth News). To be more active in the community that has given me so much. To write stories about the amazing people that I know are out there. To answer questions, provide information, and maybe even humor at the hyperlocal level. I’m looking forward to getting to know more of you as I become more active at Petworth News.

Menya Hosaki is the passionate exploration of Eric Yoo’s love for ramen, family and community

We first met up with Eric Yoo in March 2019, back when the world didn’t know about Covid-19, and the idea of opening a new restaurant was nerve-wracking for completely different reasons. Now, over a year later Eric is getting ready to open his new ramen restaurant, Menya Hosaki, on Upshur Street. His passion for ramen, his description of the menu and his deep-seated reasons for upending his life to open a ramen restaurant sounds like Petworth’s latest Asian restaurant is going to be amazing.

Fighting to keep a field inside an alley from becoming row homes

Fighting to keep a field inside an alley from becoming row homes

Step out of Upshur Pool, cross 14th Street between Varnum and Webster Streets, duck onto a narrow path between two row homes, keep walking and you’ll emerge onto what appears to be a typical Petworth alley bordered by trash cans and tiny, fenced back yards. But this isn’t a typical alley, it’s pretty unique.

What are those bells and chimes so many have been hearing?

What are those bells and chimes so many have been hearing?

With quarantine in DC came a bit more quiet during the day. Less cars on the street, less people walking around, less overall noise. You heard the birds much more (even if they’re actually singing quieter than normal). In May into June, people started hearing bells chiming during the day, bells they thought they haven’t heard before, or heard in a long time.

Is there a small crew of small people burglarizing area backyards?

Is there a small crew of small people burglarizing area backyards?

For more than a month, the emails have come across the listservs, each with a similar story to share: a bike was stolen from a backyard or a garage. Now, bike theft happens, but there’s been an obvious rash of theft across the area, from Crestwood to 16th Street Heights, Brightwood to Petworth.

Celebrate Juneteenth with your neighbors, in your front yard

Celebrate Juneteenth with your neighbors, in your front yard

A group of neighbors have put together an event to celebrate Juneteenth — and you don’t have to leave your front yard if you don’t want to. The holiday commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States when on June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally told they had been freed, more than two years after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
