Is Petworth strange & hypnotic?
/Nah, we just enjoying living here. (Ok, maybe we're a little strange.)
What is it about Petworth that inspires so many strange, hynpotic blogs? http://t.co/cGnQXlUiuV

Thank you 1,000 times over for supporting Petworth News! It's a nice birthday present to have the Facebook page hit 1,000 Likes.
I hope the blog here at PetworthNews.org and on Facebook continues to be useful to the community.
Be sure to come out to Petworth Citizen on Monday, June 29th at 6pm to celebrate!
Mildly interesting side note: the 1,000th Like was Katie Ashmore (thanks Katie!) then someone unliked the page, bringing it back to 999, then Dan Hausman brought it back to 1,000 (thanks Dan!) and Jeff Davis was 1,001 (thanks Jeff!).
I received some cool, DC-centric birthday gifts from family and friends today. A beautiful gold leaf map of DC (you can even see Petworth on it) and a signed copy of The Martini Shot by George Pelecanos. Thanks Heather & Fletchers!
And you know you're getting older when your teenage niece writes in a birthday card "Age is only a number!" :)

Truly a sign of the times for Initiative 71 and pot decriminalization here in Washington.
Last month I had the opportunity to spend a day doing a ride-along with MPD Lieutenant Van Crawford, the PSA 407 manager in Petworth. My main goal was to get an understanding of some of the issues MPD is facing regarding local criminal activity and community engagement, and share with MPD some of the thoughts and concerns of the community. It was a great ride-along and I'd like to share the experience with you. This is a long read story, broken up into two separate posts, so grab a coffee, soda, beer or your favorite snack and dig in.
Read more after the break:

After we left the fellow asking about the neighborhood, we went through several areas talking about specific problem houses. I won’t mention addresses or streets, but do want to give you an idea of some of the issues we discussed, and a high-level overview of MPDs plans.

I found a DC Metro Transit Police SUV parked backwards at the bus stop around the 4200 block of New Hampshire Ave. An MPD PSA 407 patrol car rolled up, so I waited for them to talk with MTPD before I approached. Just me with a camera slung across my back, looking casual. At 1am.
A MTPD officer came up onto the sidewalk from the street, so I approached her and asked politely what was going on.
"What's it to you?" she said.

Eight families are taking part in the sale, offering clothes for boys and girls, baby and toddler stuff and more.

Though from the Craigslist post, it sounds like they're selling the whole shebang and getting out of dodge: selling the kid, baby AND the house...

The Washington Post has a light-hearted quiz to test how well you know DC streets (quadrants, flowers, syllables, oh my!).
Take a quick (and kinda easy) quiz on at the streets of our fair District.
The Petworth Dance Project entertained neighbors at its first production at Petworth Park earlier this month, and they're gearing up to do more shows throughout the summer.
They could use our support (and you get a few cool perks)!
Check out their Indiegogo campaign and if able, throw them a little support. You can pick from Petworth Citizen, Lighthouse Yoga, or even a hearty Thank You from the organizers (you'll get that I'm sure no matter what you donate).
Another successful and fun Grant Circle Social tonight. Not sure of the count, maybe 40 or more neighbors showed up. A lot of new faces as well, which was great.
Feel free to tag yourself in the photos on Facebook! (As a "Page" I can't tag individuals... odd, yah?)
June is busy! Takoma is having a "4th Street Block Party" on Saturday, June 13th from 5-7pm.
From an email on the listservs from Laura Barclay, the Executive Director of the Old Takoma Business Association:
"There will be food trucks, live music and activities for the kids at this inaugural all Takoma block party! Federal City Brothers Food Truck, straight out of Union Kitchen, will be making its first visit to Takoma along with Takoma favorite, DC Ballers (they're one of Drew's favorites, too). Additional trucks will be announced. Free popsicles for the kids! Music as well.
