Vacant/blighted buildings are languishing and hurting the vibrancy of the Kennedy Street community

Vacant/blighted properties clustered on the 400 block of Kennedy Street NW owned by the same development company are an eyesore for the neighborhood, rodent havens and trash-dumping grounds. These properties have been labeled vacant and/or blighted for years, but those designations and DCRA have done nothing to encourage the owner to take action. At this point, it seems only legislation and more residential complaints are needed to get something done.

ANXO plans to expand their Kennedy Street location with full kitchen, more seating

ANXO cidery announced that they are planning on shutting down their flagship location in Truxton Circle because of a 15-month struggle to find common ground with their landlord. While being heartbroken to have to close their Florida Avenue location — ANXO opened over 5 years ago at that spot — they have grown from a small restaurant and cidery to an international distributor of their house-made ciders.

The silver-lining of this news is that ANXO plans on expanding their Brightwood Park location at 711 Kennedy St NW.

Out of curiosity, I recently started digging around the DC Library Archives for stuff about the Petworth neighborhood and came across a small book published in 1995, “Growing Up in Petworth in Washington DC 1919-1950.” Written by Margaret MacGill at the age of 76, she recalls the story of her family and childhood in her family house at 528 Taylor St NW. She writes in the book that the home’s location “must have seemed like the end of the world to be moving that far out from downtown.”

The modernized Lorenzo “Larry” Allen Park opened on Friday, April 9th. This triangle park bordered by Illinois Avenue, Gallatin, 9th and Hamilton Streets NW is named after Lorenzo Allen, who served as the Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for 4D04 Commissioner from 1972-1992, and through this role advocated strongly for the community and its beautifications.

Historians Mara Cherkasky and Sarah Jane Shoenfeld, of Prologue DC, along with GIS specialist Brian Kraft, have devoted efforts since 2014 to mapping racially restricted property covenants in DC to illuminate the racism ingrained into DC housing history. Similarly, Tanya Golash-Boza is a sociologist who grew up in Petworth and now studies race and gentrification. Both Cherkasky and Golash-Boza have presented in TedX seminars examining housing segregation in DC and Petworth-area gentrification. Petworth News met with these historians and sociologists to talk more about the history of segregation and racism in our neighborhood.
