Petworth Porchfest 2026 will feature more than 400 bands performing on over 150 porches. That’s a lot of free music within walking distance! This year, organizers have launched three new tools to explore the neighborhood and find the musicians, genres and porch locations for all the music and bands.

Going virtual has some benefits and challenges, say DCPS teachers

One week into virtual learning, most people have felt frustrated with technology yet amazed by how rapidly students, parents and educators have adjusted. Days feel long and exhausting even without the commutes; a reminder for some of being an overwhelmed, overworked first-year teacher. Kids are often observed yawning and fidgeting after lunch on computer screens, but this is preferable to not having a student return for afternoon class.

Expiration & renewal on motor vehicle documents extended

If you’re due to renew your motor vehicle registration, driver’s license or other DMV documents, the expiration and renewal dates have been extended by the DC Department of Motor Vehicles, according to a notice the agency put out on July 16th.

WMATA has announced a list of Metro track work and station closings for “preventative maintenance and planned capital work.” The Orange, Silver, Yellow and Green lines are all affected by track work, with some seeing station closings.

Celebrate Juneteenth with your neighbors, in your front yard

A group of neighbors have put together an event to celebrate Juneteenth — and you don’t have to leave your front yard if you don’t want to. The holiday commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States when on June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally told they had been freed, more than two years after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

I take it as both pride and necessity to only cover local Petworth area news, avoiding national and citywide news. There’s plenty of news outlets who cover both, and they do amazing work. Petworth News is most definitely not my full time job: it’s a hobby, a way to give to my community, and what I call my “bad habit keeping me up at night” writing articles, sharing tweets, etc. I have a full-time job, a family, other things I do. If I covered more than local, it would take all my time. So, I draw a line. Local new only, and only when I can.

As so many are, I was horrified by George Floyd’s murder. I felt powerless, angry, disgusted, frustrated, depressed.

Virgin Remy Hair on Upshur broken into and burgled overnight

Virgin Remy Hair at 825 Upshur Street NW was broken into and burgled late Sunday night, with products and some electronics stolen. The national chain store sells high-end hair products like extensions, wigs and other accessories. Members of the community came out in the morning and volunteered to clean up the mess.

The Parks at Walter Reed has announced a packed calendar of events stretching from spring through late fall ensuring the Great Lawn and plaza remain the beating heart of Uptown. The calendar mixes free fitness classes, live music, cultural programming and fan-favorite markets. All events are free (or low-cost for fitness), all-ages and welcoming to all.
