Read MoreThe modernized Lorenzo “Larry” Allen Park opened on Friday, April 9th. This triangle park bordered by Illinois Avenue, Gallatin, 9th and Hamilton Streets NW is named after Lorenzo Allen, who served as the Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for 4D04 Commissioner from 1972-1992, and through this role advocated strongly for the community and its beautifications.
Read MoreHistorians Mara Cherkasky and Sarah Jane Shoenfeld, of Prologue DC, along with GIS specialist Brian Kraft, have devoted efforts since 2014 to mapping racially restricted property covenants in DC to illuminate the racism ingrained into DC housing history. Similarly, Tanya Golash-Boza is a sociologist who grew up in Petworth and now studies race and gentrification. Both Cherkasky and Golash-Boza have presented in TedX seminars examining housing segregation in DC and Petworth-area gentrification. Petworth News met with these historians and sociologists to talk more about the history of segregation and racism in our neighborhood.

Petworth PorchFest 2021 will take place on Saturday, April 24th, from 2-6pm. Following in the footsteps of other successful PorchFests throughout the District, Petworth PorchFest is a neighborhood-wide live music event that will feature dozens of bands hosted on porches throughout Petworth.

Opened late November, Mita Cafe is the newest addition to this strip and Brightwood Park is lucky to have them. Sharing space with the florist Roots and Blooms, the dynamic team of Chef Takehiko Inoue, Misrak Gebrhiwot, and Misrak’s Cousin Z, bring Ethiopian and Japanese cuisine to this block. This is not a fusion experiment but almost like two separate cafes within one cozy space teeming with plants.

The new playground replaced a nearly 40-year old playground that was too small and proved to be unsafe for multiple students, according to Fareha Ahmed with the Truesdell’s Family Teacher Organization.

Mutual aids have operated within Wards 7 and 8 for years, but now there is one in every DC Ward.
As people began to lose their jobs during the pandemic, more local residents found themselves unable to purchase basic items for themselves or their families. Simultaneously, Washingtonians wanted to assist their neighbors. Volunteers from the already existing mutual aids worked across the city to support the creation of ward specific mutual aids.
