Bill White, owner of Fish in the Hood, is in the hospital and his family could use your help

Bill White is an awesome guy. I first met him several years ago at his restaurant Fish in the Neighborhood on Georgia Avenue in Park View. Known as “Fish in the Hood,” the restaurant is one of the best places in DC to get fresh seafood. The popular restaurant has gone through ups and downs, a fire, issues with his landlord and still has stayed open to serve the community.

Bill is in the hospital with a lung infection and collapsed lung, and doesn’t have insurance. His step-mother has organized a GoFundMe to help cover costs.

In the early hours of March 3, fire trucks converged on Renee's Petworth rowhouse on the 500 block of Shepherd Street NW, where a fire had started in the bathroom. After two hours, and believing they had completely quenched the fire, DCFD left. Renee spent the night at her cousin’s and hoped that the damage would be repairable. Tragically, the fire re-ignited, and firefighters returned around 5am to find the house going up in flames.

After it was discovered that the Petworth mural on the 800 block of Upshur Street NW was tagged and damaged, Petworth News put out the call for neighbors to help repair it. People have really responded to the GoFundMe campaign, a sign of how much this mural means to the neighborhood.

We reached out to Tom Pipkin, who helped spearhead the initial design of the mural in 2015, to see about next steps.

DC Mask Protection effort... when the government doesn't provide, citizens step up

A group reached out looking for support for their campaign to produce masks for local hospitals who are not getting the supplies they need. DC Mask Protection is creating hand-made cloth masks for area hospitals and caregivers while helping a local garment / dry-cleaning shops generate much-needed revenue.

The concept is pretty simple. The DC Mask Protection group uses donations to help procure cloth that they then bring to local shops to produce the masks. Those masks are then delivered to hospitals, organizations and others in need.
