Petworth Park needs you to volunteer

The Friends of Petworth Park is a non-profit that was formed in 2012 to partner with the Department of Parks and Recreation to help guide the development and community use of the park at 8th and Taylor Streets NW.

The current board that runs the non-profit is looking for residents to join them and take over a few open seats. Some of the roles include Secretary (keeps meeting minutes / some postings and social media) Treasurer (is also the registered agent) files taxes/ manages our bank account, and President (who generally works with DPR, DGS, permits, planning etc.). Their bylaws require at least three people on the board, but more people will mean more work can get done.

“It’s really loose,” said Sarah Gabriel. “We have set up the bylaws so outside the bare minimum of those positions (same as any 501c3 ) people could do so much more or just the basics to keep the org in good standing with the city. It doesn’t have to be a super heavy lift!”

With the re-opening of Petworth Park, there is a great opportunity to re-envision how Friends of Petworth Park can support and represent the community in advocating for Petworth Park, and an urgent need for dedicated Board members.

Friends of Petworth Park, established in 2012, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and a DPR official park partner. It exists to support recreational, cultural, and educational activities at the park, as well as to assist in the maintenance and programming at the Petworth Recreation Center and surrounding grounds at 801 Taylor St NW. The organization relies on the participation and leadership of community members like you. Founding (and current) Board members need your help.

They are currently seeking members for President, Treasurer, and Secretary. While they have had volunteers come forward for other roles, we have had just one community member step up to take on a critical board position and need two more. If those positions are not filled, then the organization has to be shutdown, and there would be a gap in oversight in managing the park.

Please consider this opportunity as a small way to give back to your community and contribute to a much loved and heavily used public space. If you are able to volunteer, or if you have questions, please contact them at friendsofpetworthpark@gmail.com.
