So what happened to Petworth Social Bar & Grill anyway?

Petworth Social Bar and Grill opened in December of 2022, replacing Taqueria del Barrio (and Domku before that). Before the restaurant opened, we conducted a survey of readers to see what kind of restaurant people wanted. The number one cuisine was Indian, quickly followed by Italian. What everyone seemed to agree on was a family-friendly place to go. That’s what owner Ranu Rawat hoped he was opening. Instead, he walked away from the restaurant 8 months later.

On March 18th, Qualia Coffee officially closed its Petworth doors after nearly 14 years at the location.The coffee shop had originally temporarily closed the Georgia Ave business, operating out of the neighboring Commonwealth Cantina as a pop-up. However, the company announced that it would not be following through with the previously scheduled maintenance, instead electing to shut down the location.

This storefront has had a few different lives, most recently as Bentley’s Antiques and Collectibles before it changed to the Collective. According to co-owner Holley Simmons, they will continue to give classes and training sessions, but now only at client locations.

Walls of Books at 3325 Georgia Avenue NW opened four years ago to much anticipation. In those four years, the independent bookstore has been a location for community events, fundraisers, children’s activities and stack after stack of books. The store will officially close on February 2nd at 3pm.

As real estate becomes more valuable along Upshur Street, property owners and landlords see the potential of great profit. This is one of the negative impacts of gentrification on a neighborhood.
