Mayor Bowser drops by Petworth for two upcoming events on Sunday: Meditation Park and Sherman Circle Social

A view of the new Meditation Park

It's a busy weekend in Petworth (and it's probably gonna rain, again), but there are two upcoming events that Mayor Muriel Bowser plans on attending.

Meditation Park Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, June 24th, 3pm

The meditation park at 13th, Quincy and Kansas Avenue is finally being "officially opened" this weekend, after rain washed out previous attempts (crossing fingers the Saturday rain holds off!). Join DPR, Councilmember Brandon Todd and the Mayor as they cut the ribbon on this new "tranquil space" in Petworth.

“The Petworth Meditation Garden is an example how we can transform a small space into a tremendous community amenity,” said Mayor Bowser. “We thank the community for working with us to create such a unique and innovative space.”

The new Petworth Meditation Garden includes:

  • permeable and accessible paths through the park
  • a water faucet for plantings
  • a drinking fountain for people and pets
  • bike racks
  • seating benches along the paths and central space
  • a vegetated buffer on the western edge along 13th Street

“I was proud to lead the charge on bringing this investment to Petworth,” said Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd. “Our residents deserve world-class recreation opportunities, and I look forward to enjoying this distinct and beautiful amenity with neighbors for many years to come.”

According to DPR, the garden’s permeable paved paths make it ADA accessible while allowing reduced storm water runoff when it rains.

“We are excited about the new life that has been given to this lawn,” explained DPR Director Keith A. Anderson. “This will be something residents will gravitate to and we are excited about turning some of our other small parks into mediation gardens.”

Also -- DPR will be offering free yoga in the park every Monday morning at 6:30am, starting Monday, June 25th. Details on DPR's event site >

Sherman Circle Social - June 24th, 4pm

This ongoing neighborly event happens every month in the park grounds inside Sherman Circle. Each month is hosted by someone different, and this month the social event is being hosted by Mayor Bowser. There will be some family games, food and a great opportunity to meet and hang with your local neighbors.
