Cappy's closes this weekend, new hours for Slim's Diner

Besides voting for your favorite local places in the the Washington Post Express Best of 2016 poll and the WTOP Best of DC poll, you might also be interested in knowing that Cappy's Crabs is set to close out its summer concept this weekend, while Slim's Diner gets a new griddle and more hours (7 days a week).

Cappy's Crabs was always intended to be a summertime only "Chesapeake Bay" crab shack, owner Paul Ruppert told me.

"We had a great run with Cappy's Crabs this summer and I am sad to see the end of it," he said. "It was great to see the neighbors really embrace the pop-up."

With a new season coming upon us, Paul says that they are looking at different ideas for the space that used to be home to Crane & Turtle and now Cappy's. (In case you want ideas, Paul, I've heard residents daydream out-loud for a local Italian restaurant...). Get your last blue crab or hush puppies by Sunday, September 4th.

As for the new and extremely popular Slim's Diner, Paul told me that they've watched the crowds and listened to customer concerns. "Due to large customer demand, we had to rework the cooking line in the kitchen. Last week we removed one of the fryers, downsized the range and brought in a mammoth griddle. It's 72" long and weighing over 800 pounds. We are able to crank out the food more quickly now."

Finding ways to get food out faster will be have an immediate impact on customers, and expanded hours will too.

"Now that we are settling into the space, we've had a chance to establish systems and are ready to expand to full hours," Paul said. "We are grateful to all of Petworth for showing us patience and understanding during our first few months of operation."

Slim's hours will change after Labor Day:

  • Closed on Labor Day (Monday 9/5)
  • Starting Tuesday, September 6, hours will be 7am - midnight.
  • Starting Friday, September 9, they will close at 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Effective Monday, September 12, they will be open 7 days a week.
