Resident hit by car at Grant Circle reinforces need for greater pedestrian safety

Unfortunately, a Petworth resident and teacher at EL Haynes was struck by a car on Tuesday morning on Grant Circle. While she's ok, the collision once again points out the need for greater efforts by DDOT and ANC 4C to find a workable solution for pedestrian, bicycle and driver safety along the corridor. An ANC that votes against options for safety, such as those outlined in DDOT's Livability Survey draft recommendations, is not just short-sighted, it's dangerous.

The Washington Post Express is conducting a Best of 2016 survey, and a number of local bars and stores are on the list. The selections were determined by WaPo staff so there are some notable businesses absent from their list. Here’s to Roosevelt High: an alum looks at the school’s opening

On Friday, August 19th, I drove north on 13th Street towards Roosevelt Senior High School for the official ribbon-cutting. There ceremony was set up to unveil, as Councilmember Brandon Todd described the newly renovated school, the city’s “$140 million investment.” As I got closer to my destination, the steeple of the school came into view; I was filled with mixed feelings. I knew it would be the beginning of a new era for my alma mater.

This show featured local theater Teatro de la Luna performing for kids, music by Richard Patterson (DJ Unknown) and a wonderful performance by Cecily Alexa Bumbray food by Crepe Amour and was sponsored by Slash Run (who also hosted an after party later that evening).

How the Petworth Library is helping to close the digital divide

Technology has become a staple in our lives and homes, with computers, mobile phones, smart watches, wifi and internet access the new norm. Yet there are homes in Petworth with no computers or Internet access. Getting online isn't a convenience, it's a difficulty.

One local resource to help close some of that digital divide is our Petworth Library and its publicly accessible offering computer labs.

Resident angst about gun violence and parks once thought safe

This summer has seen an increase in gun violence that is understandably making residents very agitated and looking for someone to both blame and provide solutions. Neither is easy to find.

Residents met with MPD and DC gov leadership at the Hamilton Recreation Center on Wednesday evening, August 24th to discuss the recent shooting at Hamilton Park on August 18th and talk through the issue. The takeaway is that residents are upset, and DC agencies don't have concrete strategies.

Another summer month in Petworth comes to the last Saturday, and another Petworth Jazz Project is ready to go. Saturday, August 27th finds the Project starting at 5:30pm with kids music, with jazz kicking off at 6:30pm. The evening is sponsored by Slash Run.

The FM radio show and podcast DC Music Rocks launched in July to share great tunes by bands from the DC area. The show plays music from popular genres and strives to share the songs with a good beat and a melody that you're looking to hear. I dig this station.

What's the deal with smoking pot in public?

Though pot was legalized in the District as of February 26, 2015, navigating DC’s seemingly ever-changing legalized pot law sometimes requires the dexterity of Simone Biles. In fact, as recently as April of this year, over a year after pot was legalized in DC, the City Council acted to ban any kind of marijuana use outside of private residences. Through all the misinformation, misinterpretations, and misunderstandings one thing has remained clear: transferring money, goods, or services in exchange for any amount of pot is a great way to land yourself in the DC Jail.
